If they are going to continue to pretend they are students first and athletes second then it should be 2.0. You pass you play.
If not, then just drop it all together and not have a minimum GPA.

I believe it is a good thing.
There are two types of kids in the system. Those that is effects and those that it doesn't.
Almost anyone would admit that the ones this effects are failing anyway and have destroyed the school system. Not sure why people are worried anyway. Does it somehow change your perception of the system or change whether you would send your kid there?
What it might possibly do is: keep the kids that this effects (the ones already failing) off the streets, might bring them back to school, might put them in a classroom, might put them with a mentor who is looking out for their best interest, might give them a new set of friends that aren't from their streets and might give them a chance to finish high school.
This literally has no effect on anyone that cares about their child's education. It will be reviewed multiple times this year to determine its efficacy and decide whether to continue it or not.
In short, yes it is a good idea.

This is more about keeping borderline kids in school and graduating than it is preparing them for college sports.

Same amount of kids will still be disqualified for not making the grades. you would think it was common sense to know almost all of the students barely making the grade do just enough to skirt by.

Some good points Wasp.
I'm as conservative as they come, for the most part. I've also been in education for 22 years. For a couple years I was forced into the classroom as a 6th grade Spanish teacher (undergrad. degree) or "see the Headmaster." So, I went into the classroom. I'm actually a librarian, and worked the middle school/high school library at a local private, independent school.
There was a kid in my class, did homework, for the most part, but was a great football player. He was truly talented, not a bad kid. But, bless his heart, he simply did not succeed in the classroom. We had a meeting with all his teachers, him, his parents (divorced), admin. and all the same old stuff was said..."if he concentrated on his studies like he does on football..."
You know the drill. Well, the kid tried, his parents tried, he simply, could not do it. God gives us all talents and in amounts only He knows. This kid was unable to do the work, even with help, on the academic side of things. Do we take away these kids only talents? Obviously we can't all be 4.0 students, no matter how much we talk about lowering the bar, etc.
On the whole I agree that the more you lower expectations, the more kids will slide to achieve them or not achieve them.
However, there are always those kids who just don't have it, and even conscientiousness and effort won't help.
