Not a really practicing Catholic anymore, but

Still doing Lent. It's a great thing, personal discipline and all. Good way to detox from vices and respect the forty days in the desert.
Yet, living in north Louisiana, vastly--and obnoxiously--protestant, you'd think Lent were some Satanic ritual
. Heaven (no pun intended) forbid you take a few weeks (minus Sunday) for reflection and cleanliness. Still, the GF and I are gonna do a chapter of some book in the Bible a night in addition to what I'm giving up, so that's pretty cool.
Curious what y'all's reactions to others' reactions to Lent are.

I'm. Protestant and find lent to be a wonderful practice. Been doing. It for a Few years. But I just pick something every year to give up. I don't do the no meat thing.

I'm prepared to get a lot of stares and a whole lot of, "what happened to your forehead?" Unlike South Louisiana, there aren't as many Catholic churches here in DFW.

Well, yea, south LA has them everywhere. There are plenty in DFW though.

Raised Catholic, went to Catholic school, now a proddy for the past 33 years now. To me, Lent if done from the heart and right spiritual intentions is not a bad thing, and health wise could be a really good thing, if only for eating less red meat and more fish. I personally think if it’s done out of obligation alone then it serves no purpose whatsoever.

So giving up a vice serves no purpose unless you think the intentions are true? Dude, no matter the intentions, giving up a vice, even if it is for a short period, is not a bad thing.

Such a Baptist thing to say hahaha. But seriously, yes. Never left religiousness per se. I just didn’t ascribe to anything particular in religion, having attended a variety of Christian churches.
Always upheld Judeo-Christian and western values, though. But I’m coming around to a more concrete sense of Christianity specifically, seeing it in its proper light as an adult now.

I never said it was a vice, and never thought it had to be a vice. For spiritual reasons though, if it’s purely an obligation I think you miss the whole point in doing so, and you’re under the law, and not grace. That’s my point. If all you want to do is give up a vice, then do it anytime you like.
