Star Search
There was the spokesmodel contest on there. I remember "Bobbie Brown". She was a repeat winner on there and I think she was from Baton Rouge also.

Wow forgot about that for some reason. Before American Idol or any other similar show. This was very entertaining for me back in the day as a kid!
American Gladiators
Big Boy
Brace face

I preferred Rick Dees and the weekly top 40. I use to plug in the jam box in the garage and listen to the Top 40 countdown while shooting/playing basketball. Good times.

Loved listening to that show. I had my little jam box in my room on and listened to it while I made little Star Wars scenes with all the toys I had.

Drinking and driving was not a big deal.
No one wore seat belts.
People didn't have instant access to terrible news so people were less fearful.
On the other hand, finding ANY material to masturbate to was really hard.

Also America's top ten 10 with Casey Casem followed by Dance fever on Sat. nights
Yep, we were easily entertained back then...
But hell, that was cutting edge stuff back in those days.
King Biscuit Flour Hour? Used to dig that on Sunday nights on the local AOR station.

Probably a good thing. My Junior High years would have been spent locked in my room if we would have had the internet.

I'm sure betamax has been brought up in this thread. I'm willing to bet that Candy Stripers 2 was only available on VCR.

I swear we were the last family in town to go to a VHS player.
We had a Beta player forever. I was pretty young, maybe 6 or 7, and it annoyed me because there was only one place in town that had Betas to rent.
All the others had VHS. Looking back, I was lucky we had that one place.
It was a big 2 piece player with the top loader that you had to push down back into the machine itself.
It's where I first figured out the pause button to the player on the wired remote, mind you.
I recorded Jaws on the Sunday night movie. Back when they used to show Sunday night movies.
Where's that DeLorean when you need it?

The days when Porn actually tried to follow a story line.
Some of them were kind of serious. Porn drama.

Swatch watches
Swatch has actually stayed around ever since its inception. They make plenty of watches that don't look like a fruit stand in a blender. Last one I got was 12 years ago, and that sucker is still going strong.

"People didn't have instant access to terrible news so people were less fearful."
This can't be overstated enough. Could you imagine having today's overkill coverage and knowing every little detail about what was going on between Russia and the U.S. during some of the really tense moments of the Cold War in the early 80s?
The overkill of coverage to me started with 9/11 imho. It was starting to pick up some just before that but it went completely nuts from 9/11 on. The 24 hour news networks were almost unwatchable in the days and weeks following the attacks
Speaking of 24 hour coverage, does anyone remember watching the start of the 1st Gulf War live on CNN? I know that was early 1991 but it was surreal to watch Bernie Shaw and the other reporter basically hiding under furniture and calmly reporting on all bombs destroying buildings near them.
