You think that white people in the south weren't hanged as well?
Sure there was a rash of lynchings against blacks in the post war period but it was far from a racially exclusive method of execution.
The most common one for the time, or really for most of history.

Rope is cheap.
This. Not trying to downplay the tragedies many have endured from the noose by people with racist intentions but its not exclusive to this. For centuries, millions have died from being hanged for political reasons, treason, being captured by the enemy, etc. At the beginning of our country, some people were hanged for being "witches."
