NOLA S&WB Thought About Pumping Sewage into Miss. River due to Sewer Concerns

The New Orleans Sewerage & Water Board was considering plans earlier this month to pump raw sewage into the Mississippi River after a valve malfunctioned, board records show.
The plan was to pump sewage from Lakeview, Gentilly and the 7th Ward directly into the river "to prevent raw sewage overflows onto the street," according a "declaration of extreme emergency," which was signed Dec. 10 by Robert Turner, general superintendent of S&WB. The measure was being considered after officials became concerned that a leak in a sewage force main might lead to a blowout that would be a "significant risk to public health," the declaration reads.
...
Workers were able to fix the valve in time, S&WB said in the declaration, "which eliminated the immediate need to pump raw sewage to the Mississippi River, but the crews were unable to make a complete repair."

Solution to pollution is dilution.

Pretty sure this is par for the course when living in New Orleans.

As much of a clownshow as SWB is, I'd rather have sewage in the river than in the streets, so I don't see the problem here.

Can the Feds go ahead and take over the SWB? Not sure how much further they could frick this up.
And I say this knowing full well what a clusterfrick the Feds are. NOLA is just that goddamn horrible.

Yes. Polute the Mississippi River, and everything downstream of New Orleans including waterways and fisheries because New Orleans is a cesspool and can’t maintain basic function of a major city.

It's the New Orleans way

It doesn't just affect New Orleans residents. You have to consider everyone and everything downstream.

I would bet almost every municipality that discharges to a waterway has sent untreated sewage at one point.

I don't think you understand the volume of water the MS carries at that stage of the river

Perhaps. That doesn’t make it anymore acceptable.

Are there any municipal water intakes downstream? If not, then not a big deal... rather it in the river than on the street.

It isn't acceptable. It is the truth though. Them considering it as a temporary solution shows they considered every option. Nothing to get worked up about.

I don’t see the problem. It isn’t like it is going to wash back on shore and ruin the beaches in Louisiana

As someone who fishes lower Plaquemines and eats seafood that comes from downriver of New Orleans, I'd rather the sewage in the streets.
NOLA residents want to keep electing shitty politicians, then they can live with the shite they keep voting for.

What would be the difference between raw sewage in those areas and Bourbon St on a day ending in Y?

Yall do realize that the water coming out the river gets treated at downstream water intakes.

I understand it fine. The pollution is secondary to the fact that New Orleans can not maintain simple functionality such as drainage and properly processing sewerage.

It was a consideration. It didn't happen.
