JP Morrell wants to clean up the mardi gras ordinance, including having more procedures spelled out, instead of having so much of this up to the mayor's office.
But part of the ordinance proposed would allow permits to be taken away if krews have themes that the city doesn't approve of.
I'm all for getting rid of the crappy parades and allowing new krewes to get those spots, but I 100 percent am against censoring the parades, which is what he wants to do.

Iris is now the largest parade of Mardi Gras.

3. King Arthur - 2,400
4. Tucks - 2,300
5. Cleopatra - 2,200
5. Thoth - 2,200
10 years ago 2013:
1. Endymion - 2,730
2. Thoth - 1,500
3. Zulu - 1,500
4. Bacchus - 1,400
5. Orpheus - 1,250

You may argue that Muses spurred this and you wouldn’t be wrong, IMO.
Muses managed to prove that all-women parades didn't have to suck.
I think they are really responsible for the overall shift to quality of throws over quantity.

I noticed the Nyx floats were mostly empty up top but the crowd didn’t seem that bad. They will need some new members though if that’s all of them.

Muses certainly started it IMO. The biggest beneficiary has been cleopatra. That parade has blown up and is a really good parade now. I ride in carrolton on first Sunday and it seems like every year us and King Arthur are delayed by some bullshite in femme fatale. I know it won’t happen but I’d love to see that one lose a permit.
Agree about both. My guests were amazed at how much they caught at Cleopatra. And it seems FF, while a nice parade with unique (and plentiful) throws and great bands, needs to get its act together with the pacing. It was close to 3 o’clock when the last unit passed us at Louisiana. Not fair to Carrollton or KA (I hope they had lights on their floats!). Rumor has it since there are a lot of ZULU wives in FF, each float stops and toasts at Gallier Hall. That would explain the glacial pace. Maybe someone can corroborate.
FF also ignores the city ordinance of limiting the number of units before the 1st float. (I think it’s 5). There are probably other parades that do the same.

There's way too many parades in one area. Back in the day, during the week there was just one parade a night, tonight there's 3. They already had people on St Charles at 6 this morning when I came in to work. It's really out of hand. They need to go back to just one parade a night, during the week, and alternating the routs.
Ok lol

That seems pretty fricked up

Comus/Momus literally stopped parading because they didn't want black people to parade with them,
That is 100% not true.
Here are the facts, although those don't usually matter to the OT.
It wasn't forced integration that was the issue. The City Council dictated that the Krewe's do away with their Black Ball system in which any member of the Krewe could downvote and deny membership to any applicant. The Council demanded that the Krewe's go to Open Membership in which ANYONE who applied (regardless of color, religion, etc) HAD TO BE ACCEPTED.
That was the issue. Many of the Krewe's don't have Open Membership. Generally you have to be a family member of a current member or "sponsored" by a current member in order to join.

That.
And I thought it also involved being forced to publicly identify its members.
But yes it was a slew of unfounded requirements by the city and iirc there was litigation and the krewes prevailed.

Correct. I just wanted to quash the "they stopped parading because they didn't want black members." That is some revisionist history BS that is being put out by the people who profit off of racial division. Could you probably find members who didn't want a black in their Krewe? Certainly. But as an organization, that isn't what made the decision.

I saw a video (can't find it now) where someone tried to give a couple of Zulu members grief - they got in their car, put the Zulu paint on, got out and stared at him.

She wanted membership lists and was really going after the private luncheon clubs; Louisiana, Stratford, Boston and Pickwick. Also had NOCC and SYC in her sights at that time.
They sued, and ordinance was declared unconstitutional in Federal Court.
Comus said F it to the parade and membership doesn't really give a shite. Momus doesn't parade anymore and Chaos is a separate organization, Proteus promised not to discriminate and parades. All are private, not for profit organizations. No one is making money off their parades, unlike most of the other organizations.
Funny thing was Dorothy Mae thought business was being conducted at these clubs and people were having these power meetings. LOL.

You can still be secret. But don't expect to use public funds for anything like parading if the city doesn't know who is in the krewe.

I think the fall of Nyx was more due to her shady activities going on with the funds. I had family that rode in Nyx. The left a few years ago and now ride in Orpheus
Just reading through some old threads I had bookmarked.
Nyx downfall can be solely attributed to the absolute idiocy of the cancel culture crowd and the blm crap. People were fine riding while they knew she was doing shady stuff. They didn’t care enough to leave.
But you better adhere to what the woke mob wants you to do or else.

I still don't get what's wrong with All Lives Matter. Other than they don't.
That is what sparked public outcry, they were having internal battles for years. It was only a matter of time.

It is/was a bunch if 2nd rate riders that had been booted off of other krewes or were waiting to get on better krewes.
Bunch of women who liked drama. The head of then doesn't do herself any favors, but gave those teetering on the edge a reason to bail and feel better about themselves doing so.
