There are also a number of Tall Ships porting in Nola and available for tours as well as sailings
The 2018 fleet includes the U.S. Navy’s USS Kearsarge, USCG Cypress, and USCGC Benjamin Dailey as well as the FS LaResolue from France, and the HMCS Charlottetown from Canada.

Ahhh good. NOLA Navy week includes the same amount of Canadian and French Navy ships as US Navy ships and 2 United States Coast Guard cutters.
Why is it called Navy week?

No clue. I agree the lineup is weak this year.
USS Wasp and USS Cole were great when they came in 2016

The destroyer isn't coming? That's disappointing

navy ships outnumber CG ships..... maybe that's why......
it's not called US Navy week..... It's been what 20 years since a carrier came for this? not an helo / harrier flat top but a CV or CVN I know the forrestal went to NO when the skipper was a NO native...

I can’t wait to blow a Navy boy. Those uniforms are so adorable.

I was on a platform yesterday and saw the USS Kearsarge pass by. It was impressive even at ~5 miles away. I'm going to have to take the kids.

A CVN has ported in New Orleans? Wow I wouldn't have thought the piers were deep enough to support a CVN

I think the Forrestal was here for Mardi Gras back in the '80s. The Iowa was here around then, too. I don't know how much water a battleship draws, but that was a big mofo. 888' long maybe?

It's awesome. The Wasp (similar class of ship) had a Marine Amphibious Unit in its bays that you could climb on and view as well. I really enjoyed it

I toured the Wasp a few years ago. It was badass. I believe the Kearsage is also a Wasp class amphibious assault ship. Not as big as an aircraft carrier, but they're over 800' long and have a well deck that allows them to launch and recover various smaller assault craft.
Your kids will love it. Everything under the sun is on display, from personal gear and weapons, to artillary and aircraft. The line to board will be long, but it's worth the wait.
It's mostly Marines displaying their toys. Some of those guys were pretty funny. I imagine they get a lot of dumb questions, so they have a lot of practice at slipping a smartass comment in while not being too offensive.

D is a ship's draft or how deep the hull sits in the water, the deeper it is and the bigger the ship, the more water it displaces:
I know nothing about how ships are moored and what limitations there are but as other posters have said, the USS Forestall was here a few decades ago and the USS Iowa also made the trek up the river for refits at Avondale
