This isn't just New Orleans being New Orleans, as some like to point out. There are many "advanced" cities fighting Uber as well. This is politicians being politicians, and as of now, their money doesn't come from Uber, it comes from long entrenched cab companies. So while it may be a catharsis to say New Orleans is somehow special in how fricking dumb their government is, unfortunately that isn't true

I really despise politicians, and if you don't, you're a moron.

I know Nola isn't the exception on this. Just pointing out that they are living up to their history. It is like they have a meeting to make a plan to halt any progress.

It really is just bad timing with the recent talk of reforms. The cabbies are already pissed off. I doubt these guys would team up with uber.

Doubtful that they are broken. They just don't want to use them.

The biggest aggravation with cabs is trying to call for one outside of a cab stand.

1) will they come
2) when will they come?

You never know the answer to these questions. I love with über that you actually know that a car is on its way and the eta.

Exactly. Every single car taxi was off the road one day in Paris because they were striking in response to uber. One day they will realize that they need to adjust to new times or they will fade away. That's life.

New Orleans as a tourism town needs to have something like Uber without outrageous restrictions. Let's see how strong the taxi mob is in the Big Easy.

This minimum is uber only?

Cab rides would stay the same?

Talk about an industry with a lot on their plate. Uber and electric cars will have them on the ropes in no time

It's my understanding that the service uber is providing that will be discussed today is black car service ONLY. The opposition to this is the cabbies (the same group that is already pissed with the reforms) who believe that the black cab service will take away their premium high tip customers.

Why doesn't Uber roll out in the Metairie/Kenner/Mandeville/ Covington areas on a trial basis? Would it not be profitable to operate in those areas? Are those areas against Uber as well, or are they waiting on New Orleans to lead the way?

It seems like they could operate in those areas, build up support, and then use that support to force their way into New Orleans.

Haha, I know it sounds funny, but there are a lot of young families in the Mandeville/Covington area, and no real reliable cab service that I noticed when I had to go to a few weddings over there. It couldn't really hurt them to try over there.

Cops don't write DUI's in Mandeville/Covington.

No need for cabs.

That is being pretty passive, Mexico City has Uber and New Orleans doesn't

Gotcha. I'm just trying to think of other ways Uber could get into New Orleans. Building up support in the surrounding areas seemed like a good idea because eventually those people in the surrounding areas would want rides into the city and could put extra pressure on the city to allow Uber.

pretty strong. I just don't get why we have like 4-5 large companies then like 40 3-5 car companies.

We have some shite cabs. When you get picked up at the airport you don't have much choice, whichever cab is next in line; you get.
At least in the city I can seek out Nawlins or United.
