The trick to night swimming is that you have to realize that it is literally the exact same as swimming during the day, as far as what's going on under water. There's really no dangers to it that aren't there during the day, it's just harder to see others so someone could get stuck in a rip tide and lost. If there's no rip tide, no worries. The waves are normally a lot calmer and it's extremely peaceful. We've been before when there was tens of thousands of these little dime-sized glowing things down on the bottom and where the waves were washing up and it looked like something out of a movie. I can't speak for the Pacific or Atlantic as I've never swam at night in them, but if you're at the Gulf absolutely do it. I've done it hundreds of times and never had issues.

Last time I tried it, I got attacked by a bunch of Humboldt Squid. I barely escaped.

A whole bunch of irrational fears around here.

Bring a night light if it makes you feel better.

Depends you talking about wading in about 4 fts or swimming out. The biggest difficulty could be orientation or getting swept out further than you expected and a companion not having great visibility.

There are only so many risks in life you can take and get away with. I'm not burning one on night swimming.

We used to live on the north shore of Oahu (hence my username) and used to camp out on the beach almost every weekend. We camped on the western half of the north shore, down by Dillingham air strip and the polo field. It was close to where the plane crash scene on Lost was filmed.

Anyways, we were out there or two or three days at a time, so we'd usually do our business in 'cat holes' we dug in the woods off the beach. One night, I woke up with terrible stomach pain and knew I had to drop a deuce immediately. It was dark as hell, and not wanting to stumble around in the jungle, I decided to pop a squat over the incoming waves on the beach.

I'm deathly afraid of sharks and as I shat in the water, I became more and more apprehensive. I could feel the eyes of something cold digging into me. I finished as quickly as possible, yanked up my shorts, and hauled arse back to my tent and warm sleeping bag.

When I woke the next morning, I had forgotten all about it. I set about getting the fire going and my wife and kids began prepping breakfast. Searching for driftwood to kick up the fire, I set out down the beach. That's when I saw it, only feet from where I'd relieved my self a few hours before...

my shite was all over the beach.

I've done a night dive in Mexico. Saw lots of cool creatures. Creepy as shite, but I wanted to say I did it.
Also swam off our boat in BVI at night. I was in my 20's and dumb.
I wouldn't do it today.

I do float in my pool at night. Feels great.

When I was a lot younger I did.Usually drunk,naked,and with a drunk,naked female.

I used to swim out past the 2nd Sandbar every time I was at the Beach.

When you're young you feel "Bullet-proof and Handsome".

That feeling subsides after a few decades.

Depends on where you're swimming. Florida? No. South Bay beaches of L.A.? Go for it. Body surfing or boogie boarding at night is the tits, although the swells at those beaches are smaller at night.

My favorite most memorable dive ever is a night dive in the BVI. The fear factor is there considering we knew what was out there based on what we saw during the day dives but the luminescent organisms we saw that night made you completely forget the fear and turned your emotions to awe. This one squid hovered in front of us for what seemed like forever all glowing in blue, green, yellow, pink it looked like one of those light up toys you see at the circus.

Incredible

Make sure no purple flags were flying that day. I wouldn't worry about sharks, but you can't see jelly fish at night.
