Well, if someone you know got buried in a mass grave and you couldn't even visit, that's a little scary to me.

Mass grave implies something different than what this actually is. This is where they bury poor people.
This is a mass grave:

This is a mass grave:

They may have had no idea she died. I dont keep up with the housekeepers my parents had when I was a kid.

I like this gem, the woman's head in the third row especially (IWHI)

"A mass grave is a grave containing multiple number of human corpses, which may or may not be identified prior to burial."

No way... A New York family with the last name Katz was unwilling to spare some $ to give the woman who cooked , cleaned and babysat their children/grandchildren for the majority of her life a proper burial.
Color. Me. Shocked.
What do you mean?

He means wealthy NY Jews are cheap, thoughtless, self-absorbed pricks.
What else did you think he meant?

Several stories here where the "poor" had family to possibly claim them if anyone had bothered to actively look for them, and others who actually had other burial arrangements. Sad.

I wrote a song about Hart's Island called Sleeping Here with Strangers:
Verse 1
Well life is surely strange, but not as strange as death
‘Cause things get all unwound once you draw your final breath
I’m livin’ proof of this very truth as I lie here in the deep
‘Cause I’m sleepin’ here with strangers in a brittle bony heap
Verse 2
Long ago when I walked the earth I had a name like you
And family and friends and folks who recognized me too
But I lost myself to booze and dope and died an unknown bum
Now I’m sleepin’ here with strangers and I will till kingdom come
Chorus
Sleepin’ here with strangers in Hart Island’s potter’s field
My soul has met its maker and my sins have been revealed
With lots of other poor folks here to keep me company
And it looks like poor is what we’ll be for all eternity
Verse 3
There’s always room for more and more, they let ‘em in for free
But there’s no space inside this place to keep your dignity
But a poor dead man has little use for dignity and airs
So I’m sleepin’ here with strangers, and I guess nobody cares
Verse 4
The Bible says the meek and poor will one day rule the Earth
But me I’d simply settle for a softer patch of dirt
A grave that I could call my own and live my little death
Cause sleepin’ here with strangers, I’ll never get no rest
Chorus
Sleepin’ here with strangers in Hart Island’s potter’s field
My soul has met its maker and my sins have been revealed
With lots of other poor folks here to keep me company
And it looks like poor is what we’ll be for all eternity
