Then why do you need either?
I really don't but this is not about what I need. But about what I want, a mid-size body on frame truck or SUV.

Well, you're going to have your foot on the brake and/or clutch.
You don't hold the clutch in when you're stopped. If manual is a choice, everything else is a compromise. In this case, manual over SUV.
I miss it.

I was in the same bucket. Got the 4Runner. Love it, only thing is every now and then I miss having a truck bed, but also love having a trunk more often.

This is the feed back, I'm looking for. Leaning toward the 4Runner and just getting a 6' utility trailer for when I need to haul something.

It was these guys.
LINK
If you want I can look up the guy I dealt with. He was upfront and easy to work with.

Thanks for the link if you can remember the name of the salesperson that would be great.

With seats folded down, how is the cargo area? Would feel comfortable enough hauling something back there without messing up the interior?
2017 4Runner here. Plenty of room with the seats folded down. Depending on what you are hauling, you may want to lay a tarp down if you don’t want to scratch the interior sides. The power rear window helps a lot too. You can haul any length that you could haul in a truck (especially a Tacoma), but obviously you lose some width and height.
Overall I love it. It does everything I need, and also serves as a great family vehicle for us.

The point really is, do you need a trail truck style vehicle? 4Runners are great if you're going to trail ride, but really...we're in 4 door Jeep territory with poser style. No ones going to take their expensive arse 4Runner on a trail to get branch scratches or rock dings, or really anything that hurts the value, TRD or craxy offroad packages be damn.
A Tacoma you can get a load of sand, or move furniture, or a load of wood from Lowes, or throw ice chest of fish and waiders...literally its a truck. My bed cover offered crazy versatility.
But the easy answer is 4Runner. I let my wife get the SUV this time, and luckily she didn't want to look aggressive with her vehicles choice. It's all a look.

Get the 4 runner and if you need to haul something, rent a trailer at Home Depot.

Either Tacoma or 4Runners are great choices.

I agree with the poser mentally (no intention of going off road) and not needing a true off road vehicle. I just feel like body on frame vehicles are safer than unibody SUVs. Maybe I misinformed or totally wrong in that thinking.

I recommend the Taco with 2wd and spend the extra money on the tech package. Plenty of room with the 4 door.

They offer more luxuries options than the Tacoma, which is nice. Being able to throw a dead cat in the back of a truck is also nice.
This sandy mess would be terrible with a carpeted SUV.
We took the new one this summer, it just wasn't a free for all like previously. Still vacuuming out sand too.

get a 2wd 4runner, its super roomy inside and interiors are nice like cadillacs.
tacoma is small and cramped and you "feel" like your in a small space, as far as safety you are much better protected in a 4runner plus you can take up to 6 people with you, sometime more if they sit in cargo area, plus the mpg on 4runner is better then tacoma
