Let's say we put the removal of the statues up to a public vote, do you think the majority of people would be in favor of the removal?

ETA: I would vote to keep them.

I think the people would vote for them to stay.

But like it was said above, Mitch the B**ch doesn't care. Or, he cares, but only for political reasons. He doesn't care for hurt feelings, but like a typical politician only panders for votes. He might realize now it may not have been a good idea to take them down because of the backlash, but he can't been seen backing down from it or he fears he would be seen as weak. Maybe if more politicians would admit a mistake every now and then and move on, the public may be a little more forgiving of them. But, no, they have to keep their heads firmly up their arses.

If you're really unhappy send an e-mail to the entire city council and let them know you won't be spending another dime in the city due to this.

Technically, they were put to a vote. The duly elected representatives of the people of New Orleans, the City Council, voted 6-1 for removal.

Rightly or wrongly, that's how a representative republic works at the local level. Of course, this doesn't even begin to take in the role of campaign contributions and all the other corrupt perks given to elected officials. It's everywhere, just worse here.

I like the idea someone had in another thread to replace them with a statue of a pile of body bags. It will represent Katrina and our Murder Rate. So much potential there.

There IS potential, but the real arsty-fartsy types are all Antifa thugs.

No. The preservationists would lose.

I'm on your side, but never make the mistake of thinking that there are more people who think like you than don't. We're outnumbered on this one, and their voices are louder and more organized than ours, to boot.

I actually don't believe that. Couple that with low voter turnout from certain demos, and I doubt that removal would pass.

New Orleans already had a vote and elected Landrieu. He thinks he is representing the people by removing the monuments.

That's how both a democracy and a republic works.

The democratically elected City Council voted 6 to 1 for removal. That's because the voters of Orleans Parish overwhelmingly support removing the monuments.

Mitch would never allow it. That is why the monument removal is moving at a much quicker pace now to avoid a public referendum that would be required once the House Bill regarding monument protection passes.

So if Mitch decided to murder some people, the citizens of NOLA support murder because they voted him mayor?

6 to 1 vote by ELECTED city council members. In a representative Democracy, that's all the proof needed.

I tend to agree, I feel a majority of the voters would support bringing them down.

Was monument removal the only thing they campaigned on?

We already know the voters would have voted to keep the statues. If Mitch thought the voters would have voted to take them down, then he would have let us vote on it.
