Austin took over an Air Force base that closed down. Then they built a smaller airport (or it feels smaller)

To make everyone feel better, Google the cluster that is Berlin's Brandenburg airport. It started construction in 2011, was supposed to be open years ago, and may open in 2020 or, well, maybe never.
