One of my wife's friend's parents are first cousins.
In college I took an anthropology course and the professor said research shows the genetic deficincies are more myth than fact.
I don't know if that's true or not. However, I do know in dog breeding it is very common to do "line breeding", which means you mate closely related dogs in order to get more desirable features and healthier pups
