I think they're being incredibly cautious with this considering it was a crack that caused the FIU bridge to collapse.

quote:

An engineer for the company that designed a pedestrian bridge that collapsed Thursday, killing at least six people, left a voice mail two days earlier for a Florida Department of Transportation employee advising there was "some cracking that's been observed on the north end of the span."

The state employee was out on assignment Tuesday and didn't hear the voice mail from W. Denney Pate of FIGG Bridge Engineers until he returned to the office Friday, the DOT said.

Pate's voice mail said the design company didn't see any safety concerns on the project near Florida International University but that the cracking was not a good development and would have to be repaired.

The news came as the National Transportation Safety Board disclosed that construction crews were working on diagonal beams on the north end of a future pedestrian bridge when the structure collapsed.

The NTSB investigator in charge, Robert Accetta, said Friday night it was too early to tell whether the bridge failed at the point construction workers were applying post-tensioning force to strengthen the beams.

When asked about the cracking, Accetta said: "I would have to say that a crack in the bridge does not necessarily mean that it is unsafe."

I was just looking at that building on Sunday. Was wondering what caused that glass pane to break off.

Had no clue that ugly arse building was a Library. Looks like some abomination Trahan Architects would put together

UPDATE: Baton Rouge City Hall, 19th JDC and some surrounding businesses and roads will be closed until at least noon tomorrow. Structural engineers will investigate the issue in the west end of library at 8:30 am. Will make a decision on openings after that.

You’d think the structural team might be able to get there sooner than 16 hours after the “event.”

Easier to start from scratch than to attempt to repair what they currently have ongoing. Also, a collapse will muddle the liability...

dont we already have a library downtown on 3rd.

That's a temporary library. They tore down the little library that was on the site of the new one, and rented that space on 3rd street while the new library is under construction.

Did they have a bad soils report? What type of foundation did they use?

Maybe, maybe not.

Has to be pile supported that close to the river.

So the glass pane broke out on Friday, then the crack shows up today.

Tell you what. When someone besides the taxpayer pays for this. Bump the thread. I will be contrite and admit my mistake.

It’s people like you that are a testament to dumbassness. First the building was bid under Louisiana Public Bid laws, second the General Contractor , who is indeed Buquet and LeBlanc a very capable firm has a surety performance and payment bond as well as general liability, builders risk and an umbrella policy as are required .

The design team including architects and engineers are insured the same. In no way will “the taxpayers” have to pay for a design or application issue.

I wondered if they hired the all women’s group like the FIU bridge that collapsed?

Several of the glass panes have not been installed yet so they can lift materials into the structure without using stairs/elevator.

I guess the inspector can't be troubled to make it before 8:30? They are only shutting down the parish government.

Good thing it's not anything critical.

Construction on what was once dubbed the "Library of the Future" came to a screeching halt Wednesday after contractors aired their concerns about "settlement issues" at the River Center Branch in downtown Baton Rouge.

quote:

Mary H. Stein, the assistant director of the parish library system, said contractors stopped work earlier Wednesday after airing their concerns with the architects. Out of an abundance of caution, she said, the contractors requested Baton Rouge Police about 4:45 p.m. to block off the area around the library construction site.

quote:

Jim Frey, chief architect for the city, explained: "A settlement event can occur in any component of the structure. In this event we are not necessarily talking about the foundation. At this point it is all visual observation and speculation. The ‘settlement event’ in this particular analysis could be speculated as a shift in the steel connection points which we will have to uncover and reveal in order to further analyze. We cannot rule out anything because we just don’t know enough being so early at this point in discovery. That being the case, we want to lean on the conservative side of safety."

quote:

The structural engineer is flying in from Dallas, officials said.

Considering Mr. LeBlanc died in the 1970’s I’d say if that is all you can contribute post less.

If so, that crack looks to start around the same depth as the giant cantilever. Easy fix, but engineer will have egg on his face and the architect will be pissed by the newly required columns
