Nightmare of Indianapolis

The Indianapolis speech from jaws

In typical Dan Carlin style, he recounts the harrowing tale of the sinking of the Indianapolis.

If you know the story, this will be a good refresher.

If you don’t, you owe it to the men that died to hear their tale.

This is my nightmare.

Just floating at night in dark water watching friends get plucked from the surface by sharks circling below.

I might try to drown myself.

Massive frick up by the Navy, followed by throwing the Indianapolis' Commanding Officer, McVay, completely under the bus.

Maaaaan...just made it through all of the standard HH episodes and I was jonesing for a new one. Completely forgot about the addendums. Just added another 5 hours of content...so like a typical HH episode.

That never sat right with me.

Halsey got to skate on Typhoon Cobra in 1944.

This captain, no matter what course he took was going to be torpedoed successfully. The Japanese commander testified that. And committed suicide out of shame before he was exonerated.

Crew, our own experts, and the Japanese testified on his behalf while the Navy shuffled cards about SOS not received (3 were), not giving him one destroyer as an escort, and not giving him intelligence on Japanese sub activity in the area.

Ending up shooting himself with a toy sailor in his hand.

There was a man who volunteered in the fitness center at Touro, where I worked out, he was an Indianapolis survivor. It was amazing to hear his stories...

Unfortunately he passed a few years ago..

From wiki:

quote:

McVay was wounded but survived, and was among those rescued. He repeatedly asked the Navy why it took four days to rescue his men but never received an answer. The Navy long claimed that SOS messages were never received because the ship was operating under a policy of radio silence; declassified records show that three SOS messages were received separately, but none were acted upon because one commander was drunk, another thought it was a Japanese ruse, while the third had given orders not to be disturbed

Of the 1197 men on board, Harold, at the age of 18, was one of the 317 that survived. For his heroism in service to his Country, he was awarded campaign medals for operations in the American Theater and Battle Stars in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, the Victory Ribbon, a Presidential Unit Citation and most importantly the Purple Heart. After the war, he served the City as a firefighter on the New Orleans Fire Department. He narrowly escaped death many times in that career, yet also saved countless lives during that time. He owned a heating and air conditioning business in the City, and worked for Boeing/Martin Marietta on the construction of the Space Shuttle External Fuel Tank. After his retirement, he volunteered for many years as a Eucharistic Minister at Touro Infirmary serving those in the hospital.

That's enough for three or four men. Rest easy, Sailor.

I hate this story because it's excruciating. But every American should know what happened to those unfortunate souls.

The part where the sharks mounted a 30 shark attack and took 60 sailors on a floating net...chilling
