Ford = Fix It Again Tony

I have an 8 year old F150 with the 2.7. It's cost me almost exactly 1k in non-routine maintenance over those 8 years.

Some sort of emissions valve on top of the fuel tank that's a common problem. Other than that it's been rock solid. I hope to get another 5+ years out of it.

This is a big selling point for the Frontier to me too. The GMC, Toyota, and Ford do ride better.

Tacomas are way down when you compare their sales to themselves. I’m pretty sure that they are still #1 by a good bit in the segment though.

Good friend had a Denali Canyon with the v6. He raved about it but needed more room so he bought a Denali 1500. We've both had rangers previously and had no problems. There's no magic brand and I've had a Toyota truck before.

I’ve heard nothing but good things about the 2.7L turbo motors from GMC and Ford. Other than the weird turbo whistle sound the GM motor seems like a cherry. I haven’t driven the Ranger with the 2.7 but I imagine it is very fast.

Haven’t really heard any bad things about the Toyota 2.4L Turbo either but I know the bigger turbo motor in the Tundra has been a disaster - including for people that I know. It’s soured me on Toyota.

Nissan seems like a great option but all of the dealers around me seem sketchy and clueless. Like they are primarily Altima salesmen that sometimes sell trucks. I mean that in the worst way possible.

Growing up in GA, the kid two doors down's dad drove this exact truck in the same paint job. He was a mechanic by day, ran a chop shop out of his barn at night, had a legit cockfighting rooster penned up, and an ex-con buddy living in his basement cooking meth. After school we could play at his house and in the barn, but when we heard the truck rolling up (you could hear it a half mile away) you had to haul arse. Kids were not allowed in the house or on the property.

He also looked like Mr. Larsen from Happy Gilmore (the guy with nail in his head). We used to call him "The Viking".

I am not making up a single word of this.

Tacoma’s had teething issues for sure (like every new platform) but I’d bet Toyota fixes those quickly,

I don’t think that’s Toyota anymore. But it could just be the Tundra/Sequoia being fundamentally flawed as pandemic lockdown-era designs. They nailed the Grand Highlander and the new Camry that came out a few years later.

Ford and GM have shoveled a lot of cash in that segment and it shows. I think they are better vehicles in the more popular configurations. The Tacoma Trailhunter and TRD pro look amazing but it’s not what I am looking for. I’m like 15 years too old for those.

Looks awesome. Don’t need all that off road hardware.

I think the Nissan might be the best price. Going to need to look at that one more closely. The Nissan dealers around here really suck though.

I’ve got a 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium with the old school 4.0 liter V6. I don’t think this thing will ever wear down. The new ones aren’t anywhere near this sturdy.

My dad recently got a GMC Canyon Elevation 4x4. If I needed a new truck right now this would definitely be on the short list. The powertrain is very impressive, and the interior is much better designed than my Toyota. It makes my 4 year old 4Runner feel like a 20 year old rattle trap.

I've thought about stepping down to a mid sized next because from a truck standpoint it will do what I need. Our youngest kid is almost 18 so I won't need the rear seat room anymore.

I just don't know if it would feel cramped after being in a full sized for 20+ years.

I’m on my 3rd Tacoma. As for the Tacoma, Google the question, this is your answer:

Are 2025 Tacomas selling well?

The Toyota Tacoma Is Outselling The Corolla

But the Tacoma is now back with a vengeance. Toyota sold 23,949 Tacoma pickups in March, a 188 percent year-over-year improvement. The brand has sold 59,825 Tacomas so far in 2025, a 177.5 percent bump.Apr 2, 2025

The Tacoma for years has had one of the best resale values of all vehicles. Not just trucks.

I'd like to get one of these old chevy trucks

No sensors, easy to wrench on, and spare parts for days (cheap). If you're not worried about having the latest whizz-bang technology and safety features or gas mileage, that's the way to go. If it were me, I'd go K20 long bed with a 454.

Why don't these trucks come with leveling kits?

Function and CAFE standards. A level will reduce mpg.

Get a regular Ranger with the 2.7 EcoBoost V6. Heard good things about it. Regular truck with a bit of kick.
