The stories I've heard (admittedly secondhand) about the kind of loans being taken out just to go to LSU blow my mind. 100k loans not of the question when costs are 28k a year.
LSU tuition, fees, and meal plan

Is it even possible to work and be in a fraternity at the same time?

Why are you counting benefits? Dude nobody but blue collar douche bags do that.
Because the companies under contract negotiate a total package and then the union members vote internally how to allocate the funds. They decide what goes on the check, into health and welfare, into the pension fund, apprenticeship training, annuity, vacation fund ect.
My white collar job gives me a salary, of which I need to take out to pay into my 401k and then I use to purchase healthcare, dental, and eye insurance.

Are you under the dumbass impression the company also doesn’t put into 401k? At my company they put in 15 if I put in 8, my old company was 12 if I put 4. At current company it’s actually 8/8 and then a 7% pension not just 15/8
Do you think white collar employees pay their whole insurance? It’s usually a 2/3 split where company pays 2/3 and employee 1/3 or 70/30 or 75/25…at worst 50/50 with any good company
I guess I figured why blue collar workers include it, they are dumb as frick when it comes to benefits

You’re missing the critical piece here….

Mingo you must understand that they are factoring in giving their kids 500 a week in spending money, groceries, apartment, car, car insurance etc in that figure because for a kid from LA to go to LSU it ain’t fricking close to that number

Sounds dumb but it could possibly work.
It works in most countries....about the time a kid gets in the 5th grade they are tested and placed either in a trade school route or a college route through the rest of their schooling. There are some opportunities to go the other way as the kid goes through school but it is somewhat unusual for one to do so. Not a terrible idea but of course in the US it would be largely based on family income and other social factors because that's just the way we roll in the US....

Is that not how it is in other countries?

Your job doesn’t match 401k?
Your job doesn’t pay a portion of the total premium for insurance? While my contribution to insurance for my family is substantial, it’s about 1/3rd of what the organization pays in my behalf.

America is a much more egalitarian society than most.

Not all fraternities are incredibly expensive, many are. But when I was at Auburn in the early 2000s my rent off campus was $600/ month (numerous years in different locations) and my fraternity dues were like $250/ month and room was something like $250/ month. I don't remember the exact cost but I know it was cheaper for me to live in the frat house than off campus out of the frat. I'm sure those costs have gone up a lot, but you can still be financially frugal in those regards to make things work.
Yes you can still work, after pledge year there's a weekly meeting and a handful of things a semester in regards to obligations.
Most of these huge debt horror stories are a very small minority of idiots.

Went through the entire thread. This is still the most useful, not to mention, true post in the entire thing.
The rest is just people pissing on each other. Good job on that shite people.
I have known a lot of blue collar and a lot of white collar throughout the years I have been employed. Working the position I do, I do meet some very highly trained and highly compensated white collar guys as well as highly trained and compensated blue collar guys. I have even contracted many of both that make more than I do.
Bottom line however, it seems that the comparision shown is for the average college degree vs the average tradesman. Let's face it, there are many degrees holding back the average for those who went to college. There is no doubt that the right degree will far outstrip all but the very best tradesman.
I have met many wealthy people over my 55 years. More of them had degrees than those who didn't, but there is always two common denominators. Intelligence and willingness to make sacrifices.
Intelligence - let's be honest. Most really intelligent people get degrees. There are some that do not, but that is not the norm.
Willingness to make sacrifices - the degrees with the highest market value requires sacrifices. Getting one teaches one how to make those sacrifices. That is not to say blue collar guys do not, but most do not.
But I type this as I am taking a break from fly fishing this awesome Rocky Mountain river. So far, nothing but little ones, but it is warming up and the hoppers are coming out.

No it’s not, it’s for a small group of specific tradesmen in a certain type of apprenticeship.

No need to get pissy dawg.
I am sure most blue collar guys here work the industry. Even us white collar guys in the industry get "total compensation" with the offer package when the offer letter is tendered.
