I'm generally an anti-legislation/regulation guy, but this is one of those areas that can be, and is, abused frequently and there's little to no recourse for those affected.
You lose the advantages of living in a residential neighborhood when 50%+ of the houses surrounding you are only occupied by randoms a few days a week.
Have an acquaintance who owns a lot of rental property. He's told me stories about long term tenants bitching and moaning about him not allowing them to list the place on AirBnb and shite for big events in the city.

We are headed to Austin for my Bachelor party also in a couple of weeks and haven't had anyone tell us this yet. We also told them it was a friends trip and that it was less people than what it was though.

Adding Austin to the list of places I'll never live. If they have ridiculous laws like this, I'm sure they find other ways to waste time and money to limit the freedom of the citizens that live there.

Those laws tend to be geared towards people living together, like college students with multiple roommates. Not people coming in for a weekend.
WRONG.
This, like a law that is being discussed in NOLA, is the "Airbnb" law.

If I was renting out a house I wouldn't want a bachelor party in there. Or spring break partiers, etc.

Are there fraternity houses at UT? Wouldn't that law cause an issue?

That's not even the most ridiculous law. There's a ban on plastic shopping bags.

it sucked for a while, as grocery stores would try and charge you for the paper bags
then a little more time passed and they just said frick it, and paper bag your groceries, no charge
Of course I go shopping the other day in the new town I just moved to, and a big sign at checkout - "April 1st, make sure to bring your own bags, plastic bag ban ordinance goes into effect"
....fricking hell
