Crime and murder have dramatically decreased since the late 80's and early 90's
Technology has taken off since then. You have a computer in your hand
We've vaccinated and cured many diseases and have made millions of breakthroughs on the medical front
It's probably the safest time to be alive in human history, at least in the USA. Life is pretty damn good.

Has some idiot yet said that because the country is on a recent downtrend of violent crimes that you're 100% safe everywhere you go?
Because one of those fricking idiots shows up in every thread.

Yeah ISIS was way worse back in the 50s.
You know there was a time in the 40's where millions of people were trying to kill each other daily, right?
Oh yeah, and one dude oversaw the murder of 7 million people.

we need to reinstitute mental institutions to deal with the spiraling mental health crisis the country is facing.
100% this.
Also, violent crimes and burglary/theft/ larceny committed with a firearm should carry mandatory life in prison.
Innocent people who own guns should be left alone.
Irresponsible gun owners should be locked up for life.

No. We're fine.
This was an isolated incident. Dude clearly had it out for certain people.
Things are actually better now than they've ever been.
I agree with this. It's way better now that religion doesn't run the world.

I've seen studies that suggest crime has stayed pretty even and murder has solely decreased due to advances in medicine, ability of responding paramedics, and Trauma Center ERs.
Also, crime statistics are skewed due to how they are reported. Behind all police forces who report crime statistics are politicians who are trying to make themselves look good.

If by recent trend you mean about 20 years

I mean that obviously isn't true, but the internet and 24 hour news media have a major impact on the perception of crime compared to the past

Availability heuristic.

You also have to take into account the current climate of the criminal justice system. Far more people plead out to a lesser charge than murder and a shite load of murder suspects sit on appeals for along time.

The Country needs stringent gun control laws
Yea because criminals are deterred by laws.

Link the studies. I do a lot of statistical analytics at work and would love to read it.
And there's no doubt that advances in medicine help reduce the number of murders, but you also have to take into account population increases.

The FBI's data collection has helped with this along with the increase in mobile technology.
This was WAY more of an issue years ago, and we've seen a major increase in domestic violence and sexual crimes as a result.

I agree on a countrywide scale and all that, but also factually, Louisiana has 2 of the top 30 murder by capita one of which is in the top 10.
So yes, there is a downward trend, but major cities are still very dangerous, and especially in Louisiana, Maryland, and Illinois.

That's what I'm saying.
We don't need stronger preemptive gun control.
We need mandatory life sentences for any violent crimes committed with firearms. And any nonviolent crimes committed with firearms should carry hefty possible sentences as well.

They touch on this subject by covering the violent crime rate in Japan in the original Freakonomics. Pretty interesting.

I don't think anyone has ever made such a claim. Do you have a link to such a claim? You are obviously never 100% safe.
