Yep. I grew up down the road from a man who I only knew by "Mr. T-Neg", he was white, but that's what everyone called him.

I was listening to a Steve Riley CD just now (as you may know, they use the word in a few of their songs in the interest of historical accuracy) and the way they present it, it means like "dude", "buddy", "friend".
Then I got to thinking about an old college friend who told me once that his uncles, aunts, grandparents, etc. often called the very young kids that name, apparently meaning the same as "sha".
Correct. Used to very common term of endearment. Still hear it every so often, especially from older coonasses.

I always heard the Cajun French word for black girl.
Ne gra des is how it's pronounced.

We can only call ourselves that, just like African Americans can only call each other you know what.

I am sure some of the other coon asses on the board will also know the local name for these....

Not so.... literally in the pronunciation and usage.
In France, for the term "very little" the say "tres Pettite".
In Abbeville, we say "un patout".
Its all in interpretation.

Bad in that, it's going to be considered offensive?
I briefly thought about that, but again with the number of times the word appears in Steve Riley songs, I figured it can't be anything close to that "other" word.
