they really are, I knew a jeweler(when it was my time,) and he would have diamonds shipped to me from all over the place to look at, he said when I found something I wanted we could design a setting and it saved a lot, was really surprise at how the diamond wholesalers would just ship diamonds to an individual with no questions asked, no deposit or insurance required

It's all relative. If you make $800k a year, $20k is a steal!
I think the 3 month bullshite is complete horseshite to begin with, but it's even MORE horseshite once you get into people who are high earners. Even if you bring home $800k a year, there is absolutely zero reason your bride should be walking around with a $200k ring. That's absurd, and dangerous to boot. You better be rich enough that she never mixes with the peons at that point.. and $800k ain't it.

From what I understand, it is pretty hard to tell. Even jewelers can't without special tools. She will only know if she goes to get rid of it post-divorce. And at that point, who cares?
If your partner is the type that would take her engagement ring to be deeply analyzed while she is engaged/married to you, ya got much bigger fish to fry, my friend.

There is one part of that thinking which is correct.
Really one should by 2 rings. 1 real, and 1 with a CZ copy. Keep the real one safe except for special occasions and the CZ for everyday wearing.

Don't see/get how or why people pay lots of money for engagement rings!
Same can be said for automobiles, watches, houses, vacation, food.... Some people like nice things and are willing to pay for it.

Why buy something of meaning to you and keep it locked away never to use once every 5yrs? If investment only, sure otherwise what are you "saving" it for?

Start with blue Nile for price points then go from there.

For you maybe...
Some people see no need for a watch when they have a phone, no need for a luxury car when a Kia will get you to where you need to go, etc.
Everyone has a vice, it's up to the buyer to deem it worthy.

Diamonds are so 1987. Sapphires, emeralds, a colored stone, dude honestly go with that. You can get bigger, shinier, and more creative.

I can't speak for the person that said that, but we absolutely decided this is happening.. and it has nothing to do with investments. We are social people, and we are drinkers. I haven't lost any jewelry lately, but anything can happen when alcohol comes into the picture.
Yeah, for a homebody type couple with kids, probably not needed. For us, absolutely needed.
EDIT - I don't agree with the "special occasion" phrasing he used. Rather.. don't wear the expensive ring to long nights out and in places like downtown NOLA. You can and should absolutely wear it during the day, to work, to dinner, etc. Essentially, the CZ comes out less often but it used when needed.

I am assuming they are referring to a lab-grown diamond and not CZ...
And if you were under the same assumption, she won't be able to tell the difference between lab-grown vs. natural unless she takes it in to be checked. Even then, it's difficult to tell the difference. She'll also be able to tell if she sees the certification

Most women want to know what they have, well the ones I know at least especially for something that expensive. Take it for a jeweler cleaning and diamond talk will come up.

I paid nearly $32k all in, diamond was ~30K of it.
She's paying for the wedding, she's a partner at a top law firm, she makes more money than me, she's agreed to buy me an engagement watch -- so yeah, wouldn't agree with that blanket assessment.

I went local in Lafayette and paid like $4k for engagement ring and wedding band. My wife picked out what she wanted and that was pretty much it.

Go to James Allen or Blue Nile.

"that is not the point" her
