You know whats worse?

Firefighthers have an alarm on them that rings out loud if they haven't changed location in a period of time (ie. 20 minutes). This is to alert other firefighters that he/she may be unconscious or dead.

Well there is a clip on youtube from the WTC site on 9/11. At a certain point after the towers collapse, ALL the alarms in the rubble start ringing at once. Its really creepy/sad.

EDIT: Searching for the clip.

EDIT: Here it is, thank you user u/ptrc003

I have a couple stories. This one is the creepiest.

About eight years ago, when I was still in high school, my family moved into a new home in a developing suburban area in Georgia. At the time, we were the only house on the street, surrounded by trees, and a main road about thirty yards through the trees behind the back of our house. It was a road that was busy during the day, but barren and empty at night. At the time, it was just my dad, mom, and I that lived there. Our dog too.

One night, around 1:30 am on like a Tuesday, my dog starts barking like crazy at my parents' bedroom window. This wakes me up in my room, but I didn't think anything of it because my dog would regularly hear deer walk around our yard and he would start barking - pretty normal stuff. My parents tell him to shut up and go back to sleep. I'm not sure how much time passes, maybe 10 minutes, and suddenly our doorbell rings. Being a new house, it was a loud bell that woke us all up again. I get kind of a shiver in my body and think, "What the frick."

I get out of my bed and grab my baseball bat, and walk downstairs just as my dad is walking up to the front door. He peaks through the blinds on the window next to the door, with me behind him, and sees a man staring through the same window. We both jump back, startled. It definitely wasn't a cop, or any of our neighbors that live down the street, but just a man. He is standing at an angle so that just his head can be seen through the window while his body remains covered behind the door.

"What do you want?!" My dad yells at him through the window.

"My car broke down. I need to use a phone. Can I come in?" He subtly says, barely enough for us to hear.

"I can call the police and they can help you," My dad replies.

My dog starts barking like crazy again.

I remember the guy says something like, "C'mon man let me in! I'm homeless and the church kicked me out!"

There is no church within 10 miles of us.

"No, I'll call the police," my dad says.

At this point, the door handle begins to shake as the man puts pressure on the outside. I jump next to my dad and push back against the door. My mom goes to the phone and calls the cops. My dad is pissed.

"Back the frick away! I have a loaded 9mm pointed right at you through the door!" My dad yells. (He didn't have the gun.)

Upon hearing this, the man bolts off my front porch and back into the darkness down the street. Like he took off like an Olympic sprinter.

The cops arrive a few minutes later and look around the area. No sign of the guy. The officers say they will stay on patrol of the street and the front of our house. We didn't get much sleep after that.

They next day, I go to school, completely wrecked from the lack of sleep. When I get home, I find my mom in the front yard, standing next to her bedroom window. When I go up to her, I notice her plants outside the window have all been smashed, like someone was walking all over them. I hear her say, "Oh Jesus" as she finds knife marks at the bottom of the window, as if someone tried to pry it open.

The man was trying to break into my parents bedroom through the window. This is what set my dog off.

We alert the cops again and they come investigate. We had given them our best descriptions of the guy the night before. They conclude that it was likely a man that the entire state of Georgia had been pursuing after his girlfriend and her son were found murdered in a trailer park in a town about 45 minutes away, because the descriptions were so similar.

I almost shite my pants.

Almost zero sleep for the next three days, before we are relieved to hear that the man was captured near the Georgia-Tennessee line.

The man was essentially trying to break into our house, murder us, and hide there.

fricking creepy.

Here's one that freaked me out when I was in High school in Zachary.

It involves Derrick Todd Lee and his murder of Randi Merrier, divorced mother with a three-year-old son was raped, beaten and stabbed to death. She lived in Oak Shadows subdivision in Zachary, La. which is also where her three-year-old son was found wandering around in the front yard the following morning that Randi went missing.

What freaked me out was the fact that the kid was found by a neighbor who went out to get their paper, at 5:30 in the morning. He was just sitting there playing in the dirt, like nothing happened.

Also, the machete attacks in the early nineties that are believed to be committed by DTL, the boy in the attacks lived at the corner of my street. He and his girlfriend were in the cemetary parked and making out(I don't know why the cemetary, but hey, different strokes I guess) and he opened the door and starting slashing away at them. The boy got the brunt of the attack as he flung himself over the girl to protect her.

Both lived, but it would be over a decade before DTL was caught.

Here's one from redditt with some local flavor:

quote:

My great-grandparents grew up in a small town located in the lower regions of Louisiana. Raised on a healthy diet of squirrel stew and local folktales, my grandparents were the Cajun stereotype. When my great grandparents were first married, they lived in a small house near a cane field. Across the field, there was a Catholic church which ministered to most of the humble, bayou town. My great grandparents made it a habit to attend church during daylight hours as it was a long walk to and from church, unless they walked through the cane. Well one night, for one reason or another, they decided to attend evening mass. They walked to church as the sun was shifting down below the visible Earth. When they exited the builiding, it was pitch black. Fatigued from a long day of work, my grandparents decided to walk through the cane and avoid the long path. The crickets chirped as my grandparents crunched their way through the cane, one right behind the other. They could barely see through the dim moonlight, leaving them to rely on sound and touch. Working thier way through the cane was tiring, and my grandfather stopped to catch his breath. My grandmother bumped into him, and they both froze. Another set of footsteps had joined theirs. They stood frozen in place, hearing the heavy thud of feet crunch against the cane. My grandfather began to slowly walk, my grandmother by his side. They were afraid to enrage the visitor. My grandmother noted its odd walking pattern. Immediatly, fear ran through her. She began to run, and then the footsteps behind them grew fast-paced. My grandfather took off after her, not wanting to be caught by the visitor. After about five minutes of sprinting, they reach the end of the cane field, thier house in sight. They quickly raced to the door, fumbling to unlock it. A shadow emerged from the cane field, walking on four legs. It begins to run at them as they manage to unlock the door. As they open it, their dog runs inside. Thier dog, Kaiser trembles as they lock the door once more. Kaiser was usually a fearless animal, and often accompanied my grandfather on his hunting trips. His bravery was gone as the door began to shake. Something was banging and scratching on the door. My grandfater assumed it was some animal. Then, the doorknob began to jiggle. Somebody was turning it from the outside. Eventually, it stopped. Shuffling could still be heard outside of the door. My grandfather grabbed his rifle and stood guard all night as my grandmother slept. When the sun began to rise, the noises outside ceased. When they opened the door, it was covered in large scratch marks. To her death, my grandmother claims that she was chased by the Rou Garou (Cajun werewolf).
TL;DR- My grandparets were chased through a cane field at night by an unseen creature that they believed to be a werewolf.

Maybe.

But I've been in the woods alone at night and felt and heard something behind me.

Granted, I get freaked out easily in those situations.

About five years ago I lived downtown in a major city in the US. I've always been a night person, so I would often find myself bored after my roommate, who was decidedly not a night person, went to sleep. To pass the time, I used to go for long walks and spend the time thinking.
I spent four years like that, walking alone at night, and never once had a reason to feel afraid. I always used to joke with my roommate that even the drug dealers in the city were polite. But all of that changed in just a few minutes of one evening.
It was a Wednesday, somewhere between one and two in the morning, and I was walking near a police patrolled park quite a ways from my apartment. It was a quiet night, even for a week night, with very little traffic and almost no one on foot. The park, as it was most nights, was completely empty.
I turned down a short side street in order to loop back to my apartment when I first noticed him. At the far end of the street, on my side, was the silhouette of a man, dancing. It was a strange dance, similar to a waltz, but he finished each "box" with an odd forward stride. I guess you could say he was dance-walking, headed straight for me.
Deciding he was probably drunk, I stepped as close as I could to the road to give him the majority of the sidewalk to pass me by. The closer he got, the more I realized how gracefully he was moving. He was very tall and lanky, and wearing an old suit. He danced closer still, until I could make out his face. His eyes were open wide and wild, head tilted back slightly, looking off at the sky. His mouth was formed in a painfully wide cartoon of a smile. Between the eyes and the smile, I decided to cross the street before he danced any closer.
I took my eyes off of him to cross the empty street. As I reached the other side, I glanced back... and then stopped dead in my tracks. He had stopped dancing and was standing with one foot in the street, perfectly parallel to me. He was facing me but still looking skyward. Smile still wide on his lips.
I was completely and utterly unnerved by this. I started walking again, but kept my eyes on the man. He didn't move.
Once I had put about half a block between us, I turned away from him for a moment to watch the sidewalk in front of me. The street and sidewalk ahead of me were completely empty. Still unnerved, I looked back to where he had been standing to find him gone. For the briefest of moments I felt relieved, until I noticed him. He had crossed the street, and was now slightly crouched down. I couldn't tell for sure due to the distance and the shadows, but I was certain he was facing me. I had looked away from him for no more than 10 seconds, so it was clear that he had moved fast.
I was so shocked that I stood there for some time, staring at him. And then he started moving toward me again. He took giant, exaggerated tip toed steps, as if he were a cartoon character sneaking up on someone. Except he was moving very, very quickly.
I'd like to say at this point I ran away or pulled out my pepper spray or my cellphone or anything at all, but I didn't. I just stood there, completely frozen as the smiling man crept toward me.
And then he stopped again, about a car length away from me. Still smiling his smile, still looking to the sky.
When I finally found my voice, I blurted out the first thing that came to mind. What I meant to ask was, "What the **** do you want?!" in an angry, commanding tone. What came out was a whimper, "What the fuu…?"
Regardless of whether or not humans can smell fear, they can certainly hear it. I heard it in my own voice, and that only made me more afraid. But he didn't react to it at all. He just stood there, smiling.
And then, after what felt like forever, he turned around, very slowly, and started dance-walking away. Just like that. Not wanting to turn my back to him again, I just watched him go, until he was far enough away to almost be out of sight. And then I realized something. He wasn't moving away anymore, nor was he dancing. I watched in horror as the distant shape of him grew larger and larger. He was coming back my way. And this time he was running.
I ran too.
I ran until I was off of the side road and back onto a better lit road with sparse traffic. Looking behind me then, he was nowhere to be found. The rest of the way home, I kept glancing over my shoulder, always expecting to see his stupid smile, but he was never there.
I lived in that city for six months after that night, and I never went out for another walk. There was something about his face that always haunted me. He didn't look drunk, he didn't look high. He looked completely and utterly insane. And that's a very, very scary thing to see.

Winner so far.

ETA: This one just happened to my brother.

My brother lives in New Orleans, on Louisiana. Not a bad street, but in close proximity to bad areas. One night he was walking home from work and a guy on a bike rode up to him and asked for a cigarette. My brother said okay and started to grab his.

The guy looked at my brother and said, "I know you." He then rode off without the cigarette.

We think he was going to mug my brother or worse, but then realized who he was and decided against it.

quote:

In 1983, a team of deeply pious scientists conducted a radical experiment in an undisclosed facility. The scientists had theorized that a human without access to any senses or ways to perceive stimuli would be able to perceive the presence of God. They believed that the five senses clouded our awareness of eternity, and without them, a human could actually establish contact with God by thought. An elderly man who claimed to have “nothing to left to live for” was the only test subject to volunteer. To purge him of all his senses, the scientists performed a complex operation in which every sensory nerve connection to the brain was surgically severed. Although the test subject retained full muscular function, he could not see, hear, taste, smell, or feel. With no possible way to communicate with or even sense the outside world, he was alone with his thoughts.
Scientists monitored him as he spoke aloud about his state of mind in jumbled, slurred sentences that he couldn’t even hear. After four days, the man claimed to be hearing hushed, unintelligible voices in his head. Assuming it was an onset of psychosis, the scientists paid little attention to the man’s concerns.
Two days later, the man cried that he could hear his dead wife speaking with him, and even more, he could communicate back. The scientists were intrigued, but were not convinced until the subject started naming dead relatives of the scientists. He repeated personal information to the scientists that only their dead spouses and parents would have known. At this point, a sizable portion of scientists left the study.
After a week of conversing with the deceased through his thoughts, the subject became distressed, saying the voices were overwhelming. In every waking moment, his consciousness was bombarded by hundreds of voices that refused to leave him alone. He frequently threw himself against the wall, trying to elicit a pain response. He begged the scientists for sedatives, so he could escape the voices by sleeping. This tactic worked for three days, until he started having severe night terrors. The subject repeatedly said that he could see and hear the deceased in his dreams.
Only a day later, the subject began to scream and claw at his nonfunctional eyes, hoping to sense something in the physical world. The hysterical subject now said the voices of the dead were deafening and hostile, speaking of hell and the end of the world. At one point, he yelled “No heaven, no forgiveness” for five hours straight. He continually begged to be killed, but the scientists were convinced that he was close to establishing contact with God.
After another day, the subject could no longer form coherent sentences. Seemingly mad, he started to bite off chunks of flesh from his arm. The scientists rushed into the test chamber and restrained him to a table so he could not kill himself. After a few hours of being tied down, the subject halted his struggling and screaming. He stared blankly at the ceiling as teardrops silently streaked across his face. For two weeks, the subject had to be manually rehydrated due to the constant crying. Eventually, he turned his head and, despite his blindness, made focused eye contact with a scientist for the first time in the study. He whispered “I have spoken with God, and he has abandoned us” and his vital signs stopped. There was no apparent cause of death.

My two best friends were coming home from a night class about 4 years ago in rural Mississippi. As they were cruising down a back road they both saw a figure in a cape on an embankment on the shoulder of the road. They described it as a dark figure about 4 feet high with pointy ears. The friend driving slowed down as they approached it. When they got parallel to it, it flashed away from them and up the embankment into the darkness. They said they didn’t even acknowledge it until about 15 minutes later when one looked to the other and asked, “did you see that”? The other replied he had, but thought he had imagined it. These guys don’t really sensationalize things and haven’t made anything like this up before. I think you can tell when your friends are bs’ing and whether they actually saw something or not, I believe that they were sincere in what they believed.

I was the passenger in my college roommate's car, on the way home from a spring break trip. It was late and we were driving on a desolate road back home. It was a slow drizzle of rain, the steam of the hot pavement that reduced the visibility even further on this moonless night.

After a couple of hours of driving, we pull into a small town that seemed fairly abandoned. There was one restaurant open, Arby's, so we hit the drive thru. In typical small-town fashion, our food takes forever. They finally hand our bags of food and drinks in and we're on our way again. We slip out of the town and back into the rural darkness as I'm digging thru the bags of food. I open my roast beef to put on some Arby's sauce and as I am finishing a passing car light illuminates the interior of our car just enough for me to see it. I put mother-fricking Horsey Sauce on my roast beef instead!!!! I nearly ate it too. Still makes me shiver.
