My recommendation is Doxa SeaRambler. Orange is a bit too much in this scenario.
The pros:
Nobody will have one like you
Quality movement
Well made
Good Customer Service
Cons:
Will depreciate in value
Chunky
Nobody will know it's a nice watch (can be a pro also)

Leather stinks. I sweat every day and it takes a leather band about a day to start smelling like football pads. Nylon takes longer, but will still do it. Not to mention, nylon always looks like shite IMO.
The occasion is I'm not changing the band on my watch to go do something. Ain't nobody got time for that.

The bezel is beyond fabulous. The crown is pretty nice also. I owned 2 Doxas and they were both nice. One was a vintage Searambler and the other a quartz Doxa

So if I buy my old man (who knows watches tell time and that's it) a Rolex and he wears it every day because it has sentimental value, he's a "poser?"
Cmon man. OP's parents want to buy him a very nice watch. They're proud of him for something and he's probably going to wear it. He's no watch expert and probably never will be. Just because he has no interest in it beyond it being a nice item from his parents doesn't make him anything other than a normal dude with a nice watch.

I don't have a problem with people who aren't particular, but I am. I'd find out everything possible about the watch my son gave me...what the previous models were, what the internal and external differences are, what the movement was based on and what attributes were they after when they changed it. You know, I'd just an interested dude, taking pride in what I had.
If my parents offered to buy me a nice watch I'd research it until I found something that I literally couldn't live without.
I'm a reasonably normal dude, albeit professionally curious.

One of the most unbearable douche posters on this site.
My vote:

I am by no means a watch expert, and honestly don't have the time to try. My parents decided to do this, so I said I would research and find something I liked and go from there.
Any thoughts on buying from a www that was not an authorized dealer (i.e. Jomashop). I've read that the company warranty doesn't work in those situations.
As on now looking at the Rolex OP, explorer I, and omega speedmaster and seamaster. Also plan on seeing and wearing the watch before spending my parents hard earned money.

I buy exclusively online but I would never shop at jomashop. I buy from David SW and some others (HQ Milton, Analogshift, Rolex forums classifieds).
Here's David SW's price for the new OP: LINK

The warranty runs from when the watch was sold, most online retailers like David SW sell with blank warranty cards. But since this is your second post about repairs lemme tell ya: if you have a problem with a nice Swiss watch, it's an anomaly. A Rolex warranty is only two years. Not sure on Omega. The service interval on my Omega is 7 years. If your Rolex does have a failure, the factory has a service center in Dallas that will fix anything with minimal fuss - a regular service is $435. My point is: don't worry about a warranty too much.

Because I don't like bracelet watches? Stating that folks who wear them typically don't appreciate the timepiece qualities of what they have may just be a numbers thing, but it's far from a douchy comment. Whatever though, we come on this site to share our opinions and defending them doesn't have to be a thesis, it's just one random person's thoughts. I'm not contrary just to be that way, if anything I absolutely try to explain the logic to my views...which may or may not come off poorly.

The only www. I can speak for is watchmann. No complaints. My watch broke the 4th day I had it. They paid postage there and back and had it fixed in about two weeks.
I'd definitely only buy from a dealer if I was spending $5k on a watch.
In that price range, I'd buy a Ball or Doxa and save a few bucks.

I like them a bunch.
I just figured a Rolex would be about 8k because that's what I've heard. I've never actually priced them.
I'm no expert, but below Rolex price I think I'd get a ball diver. OP would save his folks a few stacks and still have an extremely nice watch
ETA: of course if there intention is that OP will pass it on to his kids or something, he should get a Rolex IMO. It's the definitive heirloom watch.

its very different from other watches. something about it grabbed me though. i wanted a unique sports watch that wasn't too far out there. i realize most will not like it.
