This is very similar to what we have for my daughter. Just be sure that it is snug on them. Honest opinion, still spend the coin on swimming lessons. The reason why I say this is because we were very good at making sure my daughter wore hers whenever she was around water even when we were close by. One time, we were all hanging out and cooking when some of the kids decided to go down to the community pool. My wife asked that I distract her so she didn’t see them and throw a fit. I walked out onto a dock with her to show her some boats and get her attention away from the kids. Well the dock was not properly supported (even though it was newly built) and when I stepped on a board about 6ft in and it gave way on my end. I let her hand go and thought she was still on the dock. She wasn’t. The board didn’t break but basically catapulted her into the water. When I came up she was already floating and doing what she learned in swimming lessons. A buddy jumped in quickly and we both ended up grabbing her at the same time. Thankfully no issue and nothing bad happened but just that quick and being cautious something happened.

My boys have grown up at the lake. We used puddle jumpers around that age. The puddle jumper brand is an approved Type III PFD. It's for 30-50 pounds. Before that, they wore a head supporting PFD with a crotch strap. Less comfortable for them, but definitely the safest.

Under 50 pounds go with the Stohlquist
LINK

Over 50 pounds go with the Astral Otter 2.0

I've been a whitewater kayaker for over 25 years, Astral makes the best PFDs period!

My rule is my kids won’t go on a boat until they learn to swim. We have a two year old who can’t swim yet and he will not go on a boat until he can swim.

Pretty sure its law in almost every state that any kid under a certain age has to have a coast guard approved life jacket on when the boat is under power?

I would not worry about the life jacket saving the kid from drowning and keeping their head above water, etc. You likely aren't going to be driving like an idiot. The most important thing is that they will actually put it on and it not be a battle to go on the boat, and that after 15 minutes of boating they aren't miserable.

will 100% have lessons by next year. He isnt ready yet.. But we are going to be around water this summer and want to take every precaution. He will not be in the boat with the motor running. Just trolling around, with us once or twice having our hands on him. I know accidents happen quick, which is why i want to take every safety precaution.

yea, we will NOT even run the outboard motor while he is on. But i know he will wana go out some, so i want it just as a safety measure.

The puddle jumpers are surprisingly USCG approved, however when on the boat I like the ones with the handles on the back. helps getting them in and out easier in a lot of situations and emergency grabs

If he’s 2 he can go. My daughter was going before she turned 2. Obviously it’s 1000% the parents call and what you feel is best for your kid. One thing that opened my eyes to the lessons was how the “coach” trained the kids AND parents. He was adamant that parents not say “you’re ok” or something along those lines. He would express that you don’t say that and make the kids understand that being unable to breathe underwater was not a good thing. It’s uncomfortable at first but when I came up to the surface that day and she was already on her back floating with her face above water and looking around for an exit while treading water I was impressed.

Being able to swim is not a necessity. You are wearing a life vest in case you are rendered incapable.

I always like the neoprene covered ones with zipper and buckles w the strap between the legs.

Do some research on the life jackets that actually turned babies face down in the water. Can’t remember the brand.

Adding: did a look up mfg is Exxel Outdoors.

You want the kind with the hood like tall collar pillow behind the head. Keeps the kid floating and head out of water no matter what. They come with the strap that goes between the legs to keep the jacket from riding up while floating. These are the best. There is a pic of one on page 2.

Absolutely, go with one that has the strap between the legs. That is the primary thing it needs (aside from the floating part lol). Really though, without that it's very easy for them to slip right out of the life vest altogether.

Kids start infant survival classes at 6 months.

Spend the time and money on lessons. Trust me, they are ready

Add reflective tape if the vest doesn't come with it.

Many times it is not how you operate your own boat that is the problem. About 30 years ago we were stopped/motor off putting skiers in the water, and were hit by another boat driven by a drunk. Fortunately everybody was in the stern area of the boat when he hit our bow. No one was hurt, and the boat didn't sink, but a small child could have easily been thrown out of the boat from the impact.
