How on earth does one even do what the guy in that gif just did?

there are 12 center-edge pieces x 2 colors
there are 8 corner pieces x 3 colors
there are 6 center pieces with one color

if you know the patterns and have a decent look at the corners you can likely do it but you'd have to really have a photographic memory or system to remember those colors precisely.

he had it halfway solved in his head (the moves needed) while staring at it before he ever put on the blindfold and starting going through them.

eta i could never do it..but someone obsessed with speed solving could do it.

Clearly not human. I couldn't do it in a month without the blindfold.

Another thing that I never did to help my speed was put vasoline on the inside of it. That's another trick if you're trying to improve your speed and you don't have a cube that's nice and broken in.

Its an algorithm, he gets the cube set up with the proper colors in the proper places, and then after that it is the same combination of moves / spins / ect. to solve it so he doesn't have to look at it.

He doesn't use the cross, corners, t's, topside method as that one is for n00bs and the slow way to solve it.

^ and yea, you gotta keep that cube oiled for maximum speed.

Don't frick with that shite. Seriously. Just don't frick with it. It won't impress chicks, you will forget it in about 6 months and spend too much time figuring it out.

Do something useful.

I don't think that's how competitions work.
