I just want to go and buy my own synthetic oil and filter and pay them to drain, install and dispose of old oil. I can understand the argument that they upcharge supplies to keep labor down, but I'd be hard pressed to follow that line of thinking.

Rouge, I like you and am normally in lock step with you but I am not buying this. If they cut you 5 dollars I would be shocked. Also trying to criticize their business model is a tough sell since they seem to be successful.

The restaurant comparison is valid though. Alcohol for instance. I can buy a $20 bottle at the grocery store thst costs $50 at a restaurant. They upcharfe the alcohol to cover other expenses related to that bottle like labor, supplies, licenses, etc.
Not to mention liability. Say you intentionally bring a filter you know will frick your car up and then try to sue then for putting it on

Are you saying you did this already? If not I guess call them and ask. I'd like to know how it goes down. Pretty good idea if you ask me. Although my outback is set up so I dont have to waste my life on time to Change the oil

Seriously though, I don't trust a lot of those places. Have you seen some of the brain dead people they have working there? Plus, there's been numerous studies and hidden camera shows that expose a lot of these quick change places.
Not saying all of them are bad, but I'd rather spend 30 minutes top and do it myself and have peace of mind knowing everything is right, rather than bring it in one of those places, be extremely overcharged and perhaps end up with my same old oil filter on but charged for a new one.
