Bernard Cornwell has two outstanding series. One is a King Arthur trilogy. The other is on book 8 now and is set in 9th century England during the Viking invasions. If you like badass characters, blood, and grit, you'll like these books. The protagonist is a warlord, a total fighter without the typical lame soft side that most heroes come with.

The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss. The best series of books I have read to date and he is still releasing new ones.
