My question is how reliable is propane delivery and how available is diesel in the days/weeks after a major storm with lots of infrastructure damage?

And as others have mentioned, propane and diesel tanks are not necessarily compatible with suburban life....

Why can't people just suffer for a few days like in the past. It builds character. It's as if nobody can be uncomfortable for a few hours, dang. 20k to avoid being uncomfortable for a few hours every 5 years seems ridiculous to me.

My plan is to leave if I even lose power for a significant amount of time, I could take lots of 3-4 night mini vacations for the price of a generator

But if setup right you can run a long time.

My 3500 predator inverter burns 7 gallons in 24 hours. Thats continuous run time. This runs 2 fridges, two smaller window units, tvs and fans.

It's pretty easy to store 35-40 gallons of fuel.

That's 5-6 days worth.

Not counting what you can refill with after a few days as things become available.

I always keep 35 gallons stored year round.

I'm in Ascension Parish with Atmos gas,

Never have had any issues with natural gas supply in the 18 years I have had my whole home generator.

Ran 41 hours for Francine.

Ran 12 days for Ida.

Ran 11 days for Gustave.

Natural gas infrastructure across the country is terrible. It’s been neglected for far too long. I’m really surprised we don’t have more fires with how prevalent leaks are.

The problem with diesel long term is the “ fungus “ that grows in it. We would keep about 25,000 gallons n a generator barge. Also serving two fishing boats during the summer. I can’t remember the name of the product but it was used beforeStabil w as invented.

That fungus will clog filters n a flash.

bullshite. I own a 10kw generator. 8 gallon tank. 50% load gives 10 hrs. Assuming one wants to run it for 12-16 hrs a day, adds up to a shite ton of gas. You and your 25 gallons can piss off.

I just looked up a 15kw generator. 8.5 hrs at 50% load uses entire 13 gallon tank. Dude can frick off with his bullshite numbers I just go fill up at the refinery

Sorry bro, I fill it twice a day. Don't know what to tell you. I'm all NG and have a soft start on my AC so mines not very loaded at all. 25 gallons easily lasts me 48 hrs. Maybe you should service yours, doesn't sound like it's running very efficiently.

You’re making shite up. My point stands.

I like my inverters that run essentials and 2 gallons of gas can last me a day.

Ida ripped the panels and caused holes in the roof of an acquaintance of mine. He would have had no water damage if it had not been from the holes left by the panels being ripped off.

Sounds like a poor install. Typically the modules flex out of their clips and fly off if there’s any failure.

I never said it wouldn’t. But when I prepare for a worst case, I want gas that can easily last me a week. That’s why I extrapolated to a 100.

This will get fixed. I’ve seen them do it already on the Northshore.

BR will take longer bc, well it’s BR.

It depends on what the issue is. Most of our NG infrastructure in the country has had little to no maintenance and is just patch fixed when needed. If they’re running old iron pipes they can’t just crank up the pressure. They’ll need to start running new mains and that’ll take years.

I've encountered that diesel fungus before. There is also one that feeds on diesel and produces water as a by product. A sloped tank with regular draining and I've never had a problem with a 2k gallon tank that is old and rusty as hell.

A sitting tank is a lot better for long term storage than a tank attached to something that moves. Like equipment or barges. They move which doesn't let the junk settle to the bottom.

That may have been the issue at one of my sites for this storm. Generator failed to start because water was in the diesel in the engine. Once the diesel tech bled the lines a several times and after a few ties, it started up.

Luckily Entergy was pretty quick with restoration and it ran for about 3/4 of day.
