Cyclists irritate me as a driver, but it's one of those situations of they have just as much right to the road as I do. Now the ones who suddenly become pedestrians whenever it's a red light? They can ride the bicycle with no seat for all I care.

There are child rapists that don't get close to that. 37 years for inflicting minor injuries on a guy is ridiculous. He isn't a repeat offender of anything, and until this, was a very respected member of the community.
Yes it could have been worse, but it wasn't. He got lucky.

I'll say this, cyclists on most roads bother me as well as a driver, but this is the Natchez Trace. That's basically what it's for.

It's not safe. Driver's don't pay enough attention to the road for it to be safe. It is a risk to ride a bike on a busy road.

if he had stopped after hitting him he probably wouldn't even have been charged at all, even with the video evidence.
he could have simply claimed he panicked because he thought a car was coming or some other bullshite story and i doubt he would have even gotten a citation.

Really not much to argue with here, and I'm not even a fan of cyclists usually. The driver is completely in the wrong on this one.

I assume you drive vehicles when you aren't cycling right? You have probably seen plenty of automobile accidents correct? In most cases somebody broke a traffic law to cause the wreck...just because there are signs doesn't really make it much safer b/c cars are still allowed to travel at 40 mph (probably going 5-10 mph faster and cyclists are travelling anywhere from 5-maybe 20 mph. There will be accidents. The guy was a POS for leaving the scene but it happens all the time with automobiles and they aren't facing 37 years even if they kill someone.

cyclists are like golfers; we go out at 6-7am on a saturday, and 95% of them are OFF the trace entirely by noon.
i've driven 50 miles on the trace and maybe seen 2 cars before. its generally only busy in the afternoons and of course, the fall when all the leaves are changing colors.
at least the north end of the trace where i live. can't speak to the rest of the road.

dude, you are being a thicky whale omelet.
1. it wasn't an accident.
2. he hit and ran
3. he destroyed evidence after he deliberately assaulted the cyclist with a deadly weapon.
4. he lied to investigators.
homeboy is going away for a long time. this wasn't someone who accidently bumped into another car and fled to avoid the insurance hit..this was a carefully planned attack.
