Happens...
CBS DETROIT) - A Michigan woman was scammed out of over $13,500 after a man posing as a deputy called her and told her there was a warrant out for her arrest and that she needed to pay him or else authorities would come to her home and arrest her, officials said.
Troy police officers say a resident received a voicemail earlier this month from a man who said he was an Oakland County deputy.
She called the number back, and the man told her there was a warrant for her arrest for not showing up to a court date. He said if she didn't pay $16,500, she would be arrested at her home.
The victim told police she was skeptical, but the scammer convinced her the situation was real by calling her back with the caller ID showing that the call was coming from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.
He also faxed her what looked like an arrest warrant with her name on it.
After that, the woman was transferred to a second person who told her he was a lieutenant. This second scammer directed the victim to transfer money to them to cover the fake bond they said she had.
They convinced the woman to transfer them $13,500.
Following the incident, the woman reached out to her attorney, who advised her to contact the sheriff's office and court directly.
Both confirmed that the people she talked to were scammers.

Obviously she's done something wrong, otherwise she would have known right off it was a scam.
Funny thing about a guilty conscience.

Was told they had a warrant for her arrest. Withdrew $17,000 and submitted it to some type of coin thing. I am so motherfricking mad I don't know what to do. She is normally not a fricking idiot but this is really hard to take.
Damn....how'd she fall for this?

Ok. Well, she needs to get that money back. Put her arse on the stroll and she can't come home until she has all of Daddy's money.
Your pimp hand needs to be strong.
You should still drop her arse.
The fact that a person who has probably never done anything besides speeding is so willing to just give money away is crazy. Young CR played around the edges of the law, and there is no way in hell I would give even $10. Call my lawyer or bail bondsman. And we'll see you in court.

Yeah, this is weird or we aren't getting the whole story.
I've heard of a scam where they call the elderly and tell them their grandchild was arrested and they need x money to get them out of jail.
But telling someone they have an arrest warrant on them would seem pretty stupid because most people know they haven't committed any crimes.

I wish it wasn't true but I can assure you it is. I kept thinking she was joking but she called me from the sheriff's office and told me to meet her at the police Dept I figured it was real.
It is untucking believable. They had all of our information.
She is literally in the bedroom crying her eyes out. I am just trying to remain calm but I just can't believe this happened.

Yikes. Is she 90 and has serious dementia? If not, you need to rethink that marriage
Posted on 6/27/25 at 7:19 pm to Grasshopper
Still no explanation as to why she didn't call you first.

Sounds like she went to the casino and lost her arse.

so Mrs.Einstein completely forgot that she committed a crime and that even if she did we have these people called lawyers that are better equipped to deal with that before going to the piggy bank?

This was very similar. They called my phone twice and left messages. They called her from a phone number and told her to google the number. It was indeed some police station's number.

Scammers like to pick on old people.. I dare them try that bullshite with me.. I’m not some gullible old person. Scammers are the. Cum of the earth and when found should be fricking tortured.

Female worked in emergency services and was on duty. Said the scammer was very convincing. She was worried about getting arrested while she was working and then losing her job.
She told the scammer that she wanted to call the Sheriff office to verify the warrant. Scammer was able to name multiple deputies that she knew, which led her to believe it was legit. Was told to deposit money in a Bitcoin machine at Rouses.
She acted because she was just scared to lose her job.
Once she deposited the money and felt the risk of arrest and losing her job was over, THEN she realized it was probably a scam and called me. I broke the news to her that her money was gone even though she could see the Bitcoin machine she put it in.
As you can imagine, her husband was not happy.
