I also see the side that says spelling is overrated and it's putting form over function.

What? There's nothing overrated about being educated. To get educated you have to be able to spell and have good grammar. You could be the smartest person in the world, but if you can't properly convey your thoughts in a way that is understandable, you're useless.

Here in the world of public schools, we aren't allowed to take off for spelling.

Spelling correctly is establishment brainwashing. All that matters is if you understood the message. Tyranny of thought says that kids in the hood must spell things the way white people do in order for their opinions to matter.

He's in the 7th grade. That seems far too much. Does anyone agree? He used 81 words, and got a 90 for leaving off one letter (e.g., itroduced). The principles both stand behind the teacher on the issue. At least 2-two- students go-received- 70's for misspelling words.

italics - errors: -70% at 10% per error.

Congratulations, you received a grade of 30% - F

I agree that spelling and grammar are important, but this is unequivocally false.

How? You're only as educated as you can convey to other people. If you can't do something so simple as use correct spelling and grammar, you aren't as smart as you think you are.

Exactly, and spelling "correctly" is a form of mental slavery. Who decides what is correct and what isn't HMM?

Communication through spoken language does not require spelling. Grammar is still important, though.

Well, like the email title I posted just a few posts up, you can't get through the workday solely through speaking. Until written (or typed) communication is no longer necessary, spelling and grammar will always be necessary to not look like a dunce.
