When I was a kid, I'd ride up to the Circle K on my bike and buy a few packs of Topps baseball cards. Later it evolved into Upper Deck at the Walmart, etc. But now, my kid wants a few packs of football cards and I'm at a loss. When the hell did these fricking things get so expensive and why aren't they easier to find on the internet?

short version: Any professional nerds/dads on the OT buy their kids football/baseball cards these days?

Not worth it I've kept a 2006 Drew Brees card (the first year he was with the saints) all these years, and now that he retired I thought it would be worth something. Nope, only worth like $10 maayybbe

If the refs hadn't fricked him and minnesota hadnt had a miracle, and if they had any form of defense in 2011..that card is sitting pretty at $35.00

Google ‘cheap football cards” and you’ll get quite a few. I think your best bet would be Walmart

I used to collect cards, but holy shite has the industry gone off the rails with high prices because every joe schmo thinks hes got a shot at a 1/1 Mahommes auto with a lock of hair and sperm shot. It's beyond absurd.

Don't buy a few packs, get your kid the whole set for the year.

Just about impossible to find cards right now.

Football and basketball are especially tough to find. You basically have to get to the store right when the vendor puts stuff out.

Base cards of top rookies are selling for hundreds and in some cases thousands of dollars. You can buy a box of hot products and flip it on eBay for 5 to 8 times retail. It is crazy.

Almost impossible to buy them at retail stores these days... the “hobby” went completely insane during covid. Guys figure out the day they stock and wait in line, the card shelves are completely empty after a couple of hours.

Any Target I have been to has a sign that says “limit 1 item per customer per day”. That’s how bad it is. That’s probably good news for modest collectors like me that work M-F. There have been videos of people camping outside to be first in line. I’m not kidding.

You could get a complete set for a reasonable price on eBay. The stuff that has driven up retail cost is the chase for elusive autographs. Those same folks aren’t driving up the price of a complete set.

If your kid wants to get into autographs, have him mail some of those cards to training camps.
