I posted this in the WWII thread, but I was afraid it got glossed over, and it really is a great story for those interested in military history or just human perseverance.

In short my great great uncle (grandpa's uncle) was an A-20 Grim Reaper pilot in the 90th attack squadron, 3rd bombardment group shot and down over New Guinea in 1944. Captured by the Japanese, escaped into the jungle, captured again, and escaped again. Below is a sample from the story and the link. It's a tad long (about 10 min beg. to end) but a great read that chronicles his crash landings, captures, escapes, and eventual rescue.

quote:

Captured again. "After I rested, I headed for the jungle, where I was surrounded by Jap soldiers with rifles and bayonets," Duval said. "I still had my clothes, which they stripped off me. The leader got my fleece-lined Australian flying boots. I was bound hand and foot with my hands behind back while they excitedly asked questions."

Duval gave only his name, rank and serial number, which angered the leader. The leader kicked Duval, then leaned over and spat on him. Duval kicked the leader. He became enraged and struck Duval on the forehead with his sword.

quote:

Duval was to find later he had walked 103 miles in five days and four nights, not including the times he went in circles.

"By this time, I was feeling pretty cocky," he said. On the cliff, Duval heard airplanes in the distance - A-20s. "I realized they were coming to where I was. When I saw them I knew what they were going to do. I hauled butt far as I could from that cliff. Three abreast, each firing 14 50s, and they blew the whole side of the mountain off," said Duval.

They really were the greatest generation. The world will be a different place when they are all gone.

So this young man gets captured, escapes and get recaptured. An officer of the army that captured him gets pissed and kicks him. This pisses dude off so he kicks the guy back KNOWING what's coming after he does it.

Yet, youth today are demanding safe spaces after seeing a guy's name written in chalk on the sidewalk.

This country is SOOOOO fricked............

edit to OP: Thanks for sharing and men like your Uncle are what make me proud to be American. Please make sure this story never dies through your family's generations because the youth of today need to be reminded of what being an American is supposed to be like instead of the garbage they see happening today.

Russian fighters buzzing our destroyers 20 times so close you could hit them with a baseball, safe spaces, pissing in the wrong bathroom, hating the very people that protect you, the list goes on and on.......

Plenty of military guys today that would do the same thing. There were pussies back then and there are still plenty today. There are also many hard core men in uniform today just as back then.

They are children of the long summer,
They know not famine and hunger,
No blood or steel or fire or sword,
No stench of death that makes men hard,
But winter is coming as sure as night,
And those who will not stand and fight,
Will fall beneath the beast man's blade,
A death their masters bred and made.

The SJW's would probably condemn this guy's great great uncle and his fellow airmen for not respecting the Japanese Army's safespace. Just another example of white privilege and oppression over minorities. Dem Japanese dindunuffin'.

This is obviously true, but the difference is the prevailing culture. Cowards and weak spirited people weren't celebrated back then, men like your great great uncle were. Now we have prevailing cultural forces that try to make demons of American heroes like Chris Kyle.

That was OPs great great uncle, I'm older so it was my great uncles and granddad in WW2. I think its more known about the people you talk about b/c of social media and internet. I don't remember the town in north La, but there was an area where 100s of men went to of fighting age during Civil War to hide just to not go fight. These people have always been prevalent, its just their voices didn't reach out as far as they do now.

ETA: I understand what you are saying, my bad. Not talking about people scared of war, just condemning actions of military today compared to back in the day of WW2 and such. My bad, my thoughts were in a different zone while reading your post.

.

this,

while serving in Iraq I witnessed some pretty badass dudes doing things that you wouldn't believe, yet in the world we live today people would call these hero's names like evil or intolerant. The media circus would vilify them when all they did was save the lives of the men around them.

So true. One other factor is these were young men who were kids during the great depression; they knew suffering and sacrifice as a way of life and saw first hand how you had to work hard for whatever you got.

To the OP, thanks for sharing this!

i have a lot of respect for the grey hairs around the office and i understand why they dont think much of the millennial generation. not much of us have the same work ethic and balls that that generation had.
