This entire discussion fascinates me. I am in full on confusion on how anyone can place the same value on a dog as they can their child. I have lost both and I would sacrifice my damn dog a million times over to have my child back.

My lab had some major medical issues when he was 1. We were able to get him taken care of but the vet said he'd likely had a shortened life span

Well he turns 10 this week and he's only just started walking more often than running when hes going somewhere, and he can still scoot.

Good luck. You might still be posting about your dog in 10 years.

We've had multiple mast cell tumors removed from multiple dogs early in their days. One just died at 12 (non-cancer) and the other is still thriving at 10. If you catch them early and your vet gets it all, the outcome is generally good

So sorry to hear that. You have some rough days and tough decisions ahead. Hang in there.

Prayers sent.

Mastiff had one too. Had it removed but it grew back quickly. He lived about a year after we discovered it

Golden retriever turned 4 in July. My wife noticed a bump near her tail one day last week because the dog was chewing at it. We took her to the vet and they said it was a mast cell tumor and they needed to remove it and send it off for path. Just got the results back and its a high grade tumor. They are recommending us to a vet oncologist at Auburn University and we are trying to get an appointment.

She just turned 4 and I am completely devastated.

Four is such a tough age. Really deadly cancers are weird with dogs because you cannot explain to them what is happening. Two of our Goldens died relatively young of cancers, and the vets we respected both times told us that it's just not worth putting them through all the chemo and other items a good portion of the time. It destroys their quality of life while maybe giving them a couple of crappy years at most for a lot of cancers.

Obviously every situation is different, but that's the only time we saw our vet in Watson cry, because she put her dog through Chemo and it just wasn't the best option.

Very sorry to hear it. Just lost my lab at 6 years old to bladder cancer. It was my first dog so needless to say, I was devastated and still am pretty broken up about it. Time helps but I'll always feel robbed of the full life he deserved.

You do you, bruh. Very sorry to hear about your kid and your dog. Personally, I like dogs more than I like people. I chose being a dog owner over having kids. I don’t regret it for one second.

My dog passed about a year ago from a mast cell tumor. We zapped it with chemo and chemo meds. It helped prolong her life about another 6 months until it was time to put her down. And she was happy the entire time. She took a turn overnight. Hardest thing I ever had to do.

My 13 year old Chihuahua has one too. Noticed it a couple months ago and got the bad news. The tumor is relatively small right now and at his age she recommended no treatment other than some pain relief down the road. Sucks and good luck with whatever treatment you seek. I hate this for you.

We lost our Golden to mast cell tumors. The first one was on her foot and we had a toe removed. About 6 months later they appeared on her leg and stomach. She was about 12 years old and had to be put to sleep.

We have an American Bully now that we have removed mast cell tumors twice. He's around 12. The last surgery was so hard on him that we have decided to just leave the new ones he has now alone. He doesn't appear to be in any pain, so we will just ride it out.

It's tough to make these decisions when they can't talk to you.

Mine had one in her leg. Removed it but couldn’t get it all without amputation, which we chose not to do. She lived 4-5 years after diagnosis and was almost 10 when we put her to sleep. I’m sorry, man. It was devastating news for us, but turned out better than we feared, and she had no obvious pain until the very end.

Prayers for your pup. Dogs are family.

How fricking stupid. Are people not allowed to get upset by both? Where did anyone in the thread say that losing a dog is even comparable to losing a child?

It sucks but don't let the vet take advantage. LSU vet school Dr tried to convince me to pay $5K+ 15 years ago to treat a 14 year old dog's cancer so her students could learn about it. Still makes my blood boil to this day.

Also had to out my 10 year old GSP down in August due to cancer of a different type
