Looking at this picture, it would not make sense to open the rear hatch to look at the landing gear issue.

So either he opened it to jump out, or the door was not closed property and he somehow fell / rolled out.

It is actually a ramp that you jump from. Just walk right off at a 45 degree angle (to avoid the deployment bag of the jumper before you). It has about a four foot clearance from the end of the ramp to the top of the aircraft. If the ramp is not down (for paratroop operations) you can still climb over it and jump out.

ETA: Pic of the rear of the aircraft with ramp down for static line parachute operations.

There is a emergency exit door on the side of the fuselage, maybe the copilot popped that and jumped.

However, the pilot did say he ran out the back of the plane.

If you’re a pilot and want to off yourself, this is how it should be done.

Not by locking the cockpit door and flying the plane into a building, or a mountain, or the ocean. Leave everybody on the plane alive, and with a person capable of landing the plane still aboard.

There are actually doors (one emergency, one personnel) on both sides. In the pic you can see the personnel door on the port side of the aircraft (right side of the picture) which does remain open during airborne operations. The jumpmaster uses it to site the drop zone. The co-pilot may have also jumped out of that as well.

Bizarre as hell.

Y'all ever get that itch after a long day of flying and help each other out? No one would know.

the irony-

According to the article Rampart has a contract contract to provide parachute training U.S. military, including U.S. Special Operations Command.

I wonder if when he jumped he thought he had a parachute?

Hell of a question to ask someone who just reported their co-pilot bailing out of an airplane

Lol. To be fair, probably not a topic covered during air traffic controller training

I'm pretty sure you'd let the pilot know or at least discuss, before exiting the plane.

Doesn't add up in many ways.
Could be the perfect crime.

Can the door be opened by the pilot? Is it possible the pilot opened the door with the jumper not suspecting he was going to open it?

Questions,
The Casa 212 has non-retractable landing gear, the pilot said they were missing a main wheel, what in the cockpit would alert them that a wheel fell off?
Assuming they had some type of indication that a main wheel was gone, could the co-pilot have tried to hang out on the back ramp to verify a gear wheel was actually missing and accidentally fell?

If this was the case he likely didn’t tell the pilot because the pilot would have ordered him to not do it.

Found this in another article. Probably shouldn’t have laughed.

Devin Lynch, a friend of Crooks, said he wants answers.

Lynch said from the few years he's known Crooks, it feels out of character for him to jump from a plane without a parachute.

He was lined up for takeoff from MSY on July 9, 1982.

Pan Am 759 took off in front of him.
