I’ve dealt with this first hand, and I feel for you. It will hit you harder than you thought. Prayers for you and your family.

I’ve come to realize that there is no dignity in an old death - I watched my grandfather wither away from Alzheimer’s, I’ve watched family members be in so much pain from cancer that they were drugged almost to the point of killing them just so they could get through their last few hours. The older I get the more I think the Vikings and Spartans had it right - go out in a blaze of glory and end it quick.

That said - reach out to your friends if you need something. Don’t suffer alone; it helped me just to have someone to sit with and tell the occasional joke, even if we didn’t discuss “why” we were there.

I am sorry man. I think the only thing worse than losing your dad is losing your spouse or your children. The pain never stops, you just become so numb to the sharp edges of grief stabbing you. You just learn how to handle it over time. Sorry anyone has to go through this.

Prayers brother. DO everything you can to spend time with him, as hard as it may be with work and family/ life schedules. Involve your wife and kids in the process if that is in the cards for you. You'll never have the opportunity to do it again.

We have always kind of had a handshake grip competition even as he ages where we both squeeze, and I’m 43. He hasn’t beaten me in over 15 years (he’s kind of a tradesman so his hands are much stronger than the average Joe), but today, he gave it his all.

Tough thing to go through!

I read, in Peter Attia’s Outlive, that one of the best predictors of longevity is grip strength.
