I’m a lifelong dog owner and multi-decade USPS employee. With the number of vicious attacks that mail carriers have experienced, I know for a fact that there are a lot of ignorant dog owners. I have had 3 customers tell me in the last 2 months that “their dog would not hurt anyone and/or has never bitten anyone.
If a dog has teeth, there is potential for a bite. Last year a substitute carrier of mine was attacked by a pit. She emptied two cans of dog spray on the dog and all it did was piss it off. She drove herself to the hospital because she was afraid she was going to bleed out. After missing 6 months of work and several surgeries, she still hasn’t regained full use of her fingers. The dog owner claimed the dog had never bitten anyone before now.
The emotional trauma of that ordeal has forced her to quit the Postal Service. If I had a child, there is no way I would permit them to be around a potentially vicious dog. Not worth the risk.

My 9 year old has a very good friend and they have a mixed pitbull. He went over once and when I found out he’s never gone back. Talked to his mother and said her son is welcome anytime to our house but I wasn’t taking the chance. Told her she could blame it on my ignorance but I’m not taking any chance with the mix breed of peace. We all still get along fine.
Its always amazing how being honest and open seems to work without pissing folks off....

Grew up with a Chow Pit mix in the neighborhood. The dog was a demon. I wasn't running scared like most in here.

Guess what.
I'm 1-0 vs pit bulls running loose. Better keep your trashy dog on a leash if you live in Louisiana. The law is very specific when it comes to trashy people and their animals.

All of my dogs were bought from high end breeders that had a waiting lists.
Wavemaker Staffords? I've had them bookmarked for years. Waiting for my wife's Maltese to kick the bucket.
You had me until you started on the true pit bull shite. The problem dogs are the mixed shite hood rats breed, not the pure animals.

Im a responsible owner you dipshite. I live in Colorado, where many people have pit bulls and I've heard zero of these stories happen locally. Get out of the ghetto.
I know what these dogs are capable of, but I've had mine 8.5 years and hes been nothing but good. If the owner is responsible, the chances of getting attacked are slim. I brought him on a trip and kept him crated when the nephews came over. Not all pitbull owners are stupid assholes. Living in Baton Rouge is ruining your minds.

It would depend on their attitude towards the dog. If they are one of those "pit bulls are great and mine would never hurt anyone" type of people then I would avoid them.
If they are the "I realize what my dog is capable of and we have a place we put him when people come over" then that's a different story.
Do they live in a neighborhood? They don't need a permit to have them? If they do and they don't have a permit that likely means they are the "pit bulls are misunderstood, I am not going get a permit because no one has the right to know there is a pit bull at this location".

Maybe not but I've never run across one that wasn't.

Meet the dog and jusge it then. While yes Pits can be very aggressive, they can also be very sweet. It really depends on the individual dog. If you don't get the feeling that its sweet, ask them to put it away when your son is at their house.
The issue is the unpredictability in the breed, the inability to get them to stop an attack and the massive amount of damage, fatal damage they can do.
I know a very sweet pitbull named Pear- he's a very good boy and has given his owners, my friends, no problem. We don't visit them much because even the sweetest ones can 'turn on' with zero provocation or warning.

In Colorado, there have been several notable pit bull attacks, some resulting in fatalities and serious injuries. These incidents have led to discussions about breed-specific legislation and the responsibility of dog owners
They go on to list several notable, high profile cases of pit bull attacks.

Why didn't that man jump on the car?
People- tell your children if they encounter dogs out in the neighborhood that are sketchy and aggressive- to hop on top of the nearest car- owners won't care and eff them if they do- just get up high and holler their heads off.
