Cleveland is an underrated town in the Mississippi Delta, which is a place filled with history and great people. People from all over the world visit the area because of the Blues history.

Delta State has struggled with an identity crisis driven by poor leadership. The most recent president, a former DC lobbyist, tried to pull the school hard left.

Even blacks in the Delta are socially conservative.

Your friend needs to look at the things that worked in the 80s and 90s. The school needs a giant recruiting overhaul. It needs to tell its story. In the 1990s, Delta State was considered the best public institution value in the nation. Good academics, athletics and social life.

It also needs to emphasize agriculture as a curriculum more to keep Delta kids in the Delta. It needs to embrace what farming looks like in the future as well as agronomics. That resides at MSU now. Delta State needs to have offerings too.

He has a job ahead of him, but it can be a great place.

As a 2010 DSU business grad, exactly all of this. Specifically, the bold part.

It’s a good school, or was. I graduated on the tail end of its good run. I wouldn’t know much about it anymore, other than the previous administration was a cluster frick and they’ll have a decent act at the Performing Arts Center occasionally. The contact with alumni is few and far between if you don’t still live in Cleveland. There’s a little group in Jackson and Memphis, but I didn’t even know until recently that our town has alumni events. Only reason I knew that was somebody at church told me.

I mean, I grew up in the delta, am a farmer, and my wife and I own a business in the delta. We’re not like out seeking other DSU people, but shite, maybe the school should try to reach us every now and then since we’re actually here (in the delta, not Cleveland) and are making a go of it. I have never received a single piece of mail intended for alumni, and have to seek out any info on how the school is actually doing, what the sports teams are up to, etc.

I think the business school kind of shot its wad because there was so much emphasis on international business, and they were really hoping the casino thing would take off when I was there, but I don’t really remember a whole lot taught about how to run a local business in the delta. It’s like they don’t know there are hundreds of thousands of acres generating $800-1500/acre of gross dollars in their backyard, and then there’s all these other types of businesses that are servicing these acres. Hell, the MSU research farm is like 30 miles from DSU, and there’s at least 4 other corporate research farms the same distance.

This isn’t exactly true. It’s the Mississippi delta you can watch your dog run away for three whole days.

Delta State and Issaquena Community College had the most beautiful Delta blondes I've ever seen. No brain, but extreme looks.

Cleveland is the Jewel of the Delta, but the bar is extremely low. For empty nesters, Cleveland is fine, but not a ton do to for younger folks. DSU has been run run very well over the years, in spite of lots stacked against it, it is a good school.

Went there for grad school, 05-06. Was involved with athletics. Which by the way, the athletic history at that school, in multiple sports, is insane. It was a great time to be there, and I loved my time there. Honestly some of the best years of my life. Cleveland is a small town, extremely, but when I was there, there was a decent night life, and we were often so busy, it didn't much matter. I think they do a decent job of staying in touch, I get mail from them almost every month. As others have expressed in this thread, the area and the university, I have heard, are both in decline. I have had some friends from there tell me that they wouldn't be surprised if the school was closed within the next 15-20 years. I hope that's not the case, because the university and the area around it is very unique. I would 100% send any of my kids there. I wish your friend all the best, he will continue to get my modest donation.

Im going to be honest. I lived in the delta for a few years and enjoyed it but admittedly I stumbled upon a great hunting and fishing situation. My wife was not so enthusiastic about it all. Made some great friends there.

It is an OK teacher's college. Lots of delta kids there. They are the Fighting Okra, so they have a strong reputation to uphold.

He will be ok there. The town is... It has a Wendy's and a decent Tamale place, so they will survive. My first job out of college was in the Chemistry Lab in the Baxter Pharmaceutical plant there and we did ok. Community was divided into Baxter People, College People, and farmers back then. Hard to move from group to group. Might have changed by now.

So you now have fewer farm owners who make decent to good livings, and a lot of poor people with few (if any) opportunities but just enough welfare funding to not have enough incentive to move away to try for something better.

Add to this NAFTA in 1994, even though the barn door was open and jobs were running out it all through the 80s. This pretty much eliminated a ton of very small garment factory, furniture factory, brick plant, small appliance company, etc. jobs all over in all the very small towns. These were little factories that all paid mostly minimum wage except for the 3-4 bosses and hired 25-100 workers.

Take these 2 things together and you have described what happened all along the delta and the Red River area as well. Some folks in the Red River area got lucky and got some Haynesville Shale money. But otherwise, there is hardly anything left in what used to be decent small towns back before 1990.
