A high school classmate of mine's husband (no pics of either) has just been appointed to the administration there.

How much trouble are they in or how bad a decision did they make to accept the job and move there?

He works as an administrator for a university so even if it was a bad decision, I’m sure he’s still making decent money and can always springboard to a bigger school one day. Be happy for him.

Cleveland, MS is a wasteland as is the dying MS Delta region overall. DSU is going through major problems and have lost 30% of their total enrollment in the past five years. This is NOT somewhere I would seek employment.

Seems like a cool place to have an above average salary (for the location) if you are okay with small town life. If you aren't from a small town and don't mesh well with southern towns....you aren't going to like it.

Keep in mind that it's located in a region in Mississippi that is declining quickly. The college and a pharm company sort of keeps Cleveland alive while most of the surrounding areas struggle. So it's very isolated as a consequence, and there's not much to do there other than work, golf, and spend time with family. But for a lot of people, that's all they really want.

I'm not overly familiar with all those towns in the delta, but you likely won't be "weekending" in any of the ones that are a decaying agricultural center. You might be going up to Memphis for anything you can't get nearby, which is 2 hours away.

The only smaller town nearby that has some economic vitality is probably Greenwood, which has some film business and manufacturing (Viking Ranges).

I buried the lede a bit by saying he's been appointed to the administration.

He's been hired as the new President of DSU effective June 1. He's currently employed at Coastal Carolina in Conway, SC, so small town life isn't unheard of for them. Their daughters (no pics) are both out of college, so they're empty nesters.

Kind of seems like a downgrade to go to Delta State

Ahhhh...okay, Daniel will have his hands full. He has to completely go opposite extreme of the current dynamics. It will be a challenge and he does not have time to waste - he has to come out guns blazing.

I don’t know if this is supposed to be a got ‘em because it has always been a majority black area but they never had much to decline from. It’s where blues comes from for a reason. Just a very impoverished area of the country.

Unless I got a huge salary raise (and even then probably not), this seems like a major downgrade in quality of life

Aging population. Nothing to entice people to move there and anybody with brains moves away. Poverty is rampant, health is awful, and attractions are vacant. Cleveland literally is shut down after 7 p.m. so whenever we go there for meets we have to eat after we get back. There is nothing there!
