I'm sorry
I always love these. I'm sure the single guy in his late twenties is dreading moving to NYC from Baton frickin Rouge.
The people who say "i'm sorry" in a situation like this are the ones who consider Sammy's an occasion restaurant. The things NYC offers are lost on them.
I can't imagine why a guy in his 20's would want to move to the most exciting city in america, one which literally offers everything, from one which revolves around a bunch of 20 year olds playing sports.

Any advice on how to make the most of this adventure?

Amazon prime is a must have in Manhattan as well for staples (TP, paper towels, really anything you would typically buy at Target/Walmart/Sams club).

Transportation costs are much cheaper in NYC. Metro card, uber, taxis, and walking. Utilities cheaper as well--electric bill for a 400 sq ft studio is much cheaper than a 2000 sq ft house. And no gas bill, so free heat if you are renting.

this is almost hard to even comprehend. It's like a joke.

Find a nice or gentrifying neighborhood in Brooklyn or Queens or the Bronx that is relatively close to an express train. You will get way more bang for your buck and the commutes aren't that bad. You'll still pay a lot if its a nice hood but not Manhattan bad. Do heavy heavy research.
Even that's expensive. My apartment in Long Island City is $1800 for a one bedroom, and it's not in Manhattan.
If he's trying to buy in NYC prepare for property, school, personal, state, and federal taxes. That doesn't mention the Maintenance fees which are often $1000+/month after you pay in cash.

Congrats. I'm not sure I could live there permanently but I'd absolutely love to be able to live there for a few years.
It should be an amazing experience for you, one that most of us aren't lucky enough to have.

Metro monthly card is $120/month last I checked, utilities figure another $100+/month, and although you have no gas bill, you can still have to fight with your landlord to turn on the heat-because you aren't paying for it...

I've saved enough for a down payment since I've been living in BR spending very little on housing, vacations, or going out. I'll be making right at 6 figures in an extremely secure job.
Just remember if you are renting to factor in the brokers fee, which can be as high as 1 or two months rent, plus security deposit for two more months, plus first months rent. I dropped $10k just to move into my first apartment

Oh and also prepare for this thread to devolve into a bunch of bumpkins claiming that literally no one can afford to live in NYC.

In addition to my previous post to you, please be familiar with the LSU alumni chapter and come to Legends and watch football with us in the fall!

I doubt he's living in a 2,000 sq foot house as a single guy in Baton Rouge. Unless I missed him posting that.

I would assume you blame 9/11 on the World Trade Center for being too tall as well? I mean, you already blame Boston.
