It's pumped snow but there are some decent places not too far away in the West.

I suggest Sugar Mountain. Decent amount of slopes. It's not apres ski though. You'd have to go to Snowshoe, WV for that kind of feel.

Charlotte is a sweet town. Even they are taking Asheville on a run for their money with the craft beer scene

To be honest, I am a little worried about this. If you have ever been to the PNW you know that the beer here is pristine. This place has made me a beer snob and I am hoping that the beer will at least rival this area haha.

hmmm. I guess beggars cant be choosers. As long as its not icy and feels like concrete when you fall it'll be alright. My wifes a beginner and I can already hear the bitching about it haha.

It does. I mean, nothing beats the PNW, but Raleigh, Charlotte, and Asheville are all awesome. The largest beergarden in the world just opened a few months ago in Raleigh fyi.

Raleigh is beautiful. Your 2 hours from Emerald Isle beach, 5 hours from mountains, 3 from Charlotte. Hockey. You'll love it there. I was camp lejeune.

Not even, more like 3-4. 3 hours from Boone as I recall.

That's fine. We take a yearly trip to Whistler out here so we can just turn that into that. With a 5 year old I guess it's better I semi-retire from the snowboard life haha.

With all I could find on North Carolina its an outdoorsman place which is perfect because we hate being inside. Anyone snowboard? If so, how are the conditions within a few hours away?

I grew up in Asheville, went to middle school in Charlotte, spent 4 years in the military on east coast of NC. Look for Boone, NC for snowboarding. It's not Colorado, but it's cheap. Mountains are great during no summer too, fishing, canoeing, and there's a great zip line near Boone which was once an old ski slope. It's awesome.

If it hasn't been said yet, Pope sucks. It sucked when the Air Force ran it and now it has reached new levels of suck because the Army runs it.

The only good thing about PCSing to Pope, is that you don't have to go TDY to Pope.

Will you be commuting to Pope everyday?

I lived in Cary, NC and loved it. Great suburban town with lots of parks.

Catch a Carolina Hurricanes game. hockey is really fun to watch in person.

You are "5 hours from everything"

Take a trip to Ashville. If you are an OT baller, rent a beach house on the Outer Banks. I like Duck, NC the best.

Raleigh is a great city. Well maintained, not much traffic congestion, weather pretty decent most of the time. Nice homes are starting to get a little pricey. Too many yankees and the BBQ absolutely sucks arse, unless you like the taste of way too much vinegar on meat that's been chopped in a blender.
Women aren't near as pretty here as they are down south. Great place to raise a family. Lots of high paying jobs, particularly in the RTP. Great schools, all modern.

Yup. We are looking in the Fuquay-Varina area because like previously stated, Pope sucks and the surrounding schools are horrible.

We are also looking for a house with a bit of land, most things in Fayetteville are all small lots... Looking for at least half an acre.

We're looking forward to the move but not Pope haha.

I lived there for a few years, then moved just south of Kipling in a new subdivision for a couple of years. Harnett county schools are good, but the snobs will tell you otherwise. We really liked the elementary school there.

Fuquay freaking boomed from 1999-2005, so I could imagine what that place is like now.

I am also moving to North Carolina. The USMC is kindly removing me from 29 Stumps and sending me to the east coast. Cherry Point. Living in New Bern. This will be interesting.

I had a good friend that was stationed in Carolina with the Air Force. He liked it. I think he's a ft. Dix and hates it now.
