Midland actually has some white women and the bar scene is decent,
There's like 5 bars in a town of 120,000. Per capita, that's got to be the worst ratio in the US. Seriously, I don't understand why some bar owner hasn't come out here and made a killing. Am I just missing some?

Are you a pretty good fighter? How are you with handling your liquor? There are a lot of men in West TX and not many females so I can guarantee you that you'll get in at least one fight while you're there so if you go out make sure you have a decent sized group with you.
I can handle my liquor, but I'm much better at verbal than physical sparring. So no, I don't plan on getting in any fights, and have never been in one in my life. Guess that's not good news.

What area are you living in, if you know?
Homewood Suites near the minor league baseball stadium.

My wife is from Midland. I enjoy myself when we are there. I'm sure all of the basics have been covered already in this thread. Try to befriend someone with a ranch or access to a ranch. That's where my best times are had. Great Mexican food.

So how permanent is this?

I'll be gone this time next month. Nature of my job doing floating sales. This territory is vacant, was literally offered it as a full time territory, but I could deal with this sausage fest for long.

There is some fine dove hunting out there. Big Bend is not that far away, and you can drive to New Mexico in 6 hours and ski.

There are a lot of smaller bars you'll probably never hear about and then there's the big honky type music venues and Graham's Central Station (which is horrible btw). Make friends with some born & raised locals, it'll take awhile but you'll find an entirely different side of Midland.

Stick to higher end places in Midland or go to San Angelo. If you go to Angelo you'll need to get a hotel, it seems like a long way to drive to go out but you'll get used to driving an hour and a half to do everything, especially if you're in the field.
On the fighting thing - Texans, especially country arse Texans, are big on respect. Don't walk into their town wearing sneakers and t-shirts and start hitting on their women... pretty much don't be oilfield trash. Make friends with the men first, play pool, whatever and you'll have a much easier time. I've seen a multiple person stabbing over a woman and a guy get his ear bitten off because he called the guy "boy".

I'm more than used to that, and San Angelo is in my territory. I did an overnight in Abilene and found some decent bars there. I go to San Angelo on Monday and will do an overnight. Any recs there?

Yeah, I'm not that type that would put off that impression. I always look sharp when I go out and I definitely put off a respectful vibe.

How long you been in Texas? Where you from originally?
You wear boots and pearl snaps? Can you two-step?

I've technically been in Texas for about 2 months, but in Midland for 2 weeks. Was previously floating in Texas, and I'm from Memphis originally.

I wear boots, but they're not here right now since I never wear them during the summer. Not the other 2 though.

What operators do you mainly deal with? Doing any business on the Apache Scott & Suggs lease?

I'm not in oil. I'm in pharmaceutical sales.

Ohhh, gotcha. Well at least you'll get to meet some normal, non-oilfield people, nurses, doctors, etc.
