I recently accepted a job in Lafayette that I will begin in a couple of months. I want to rent a house or apartment. Does anyone have any advice on good/bad areas to live? I am fine with living up to 20-30 minutes away and commuting. I do not want to break the bank ($500-$700 a month) but I do not want to live in a bad neighborhood. Any advice would be helpful.

You're either going to need a roommate or will have to settle for a shitty house in a good area for that money.

It's going to be hard to find anything decent for $700 a month.

Yeah that's what I was afraid of. Damn those student loans! Anywhere specifically I should avoid? In BR its north baton rouge. Is it like that in Lafayette?

I lived in Carencro for two years (just moved back in October) and commuted to Baton Rouge.

Its a nice enough town that's about 20 minutes away from the center of Laffy. You get a good bit of peace and quiet, while being close enough to go wherever you want.

Not sure about renting price though, as we were paying $1,300/mo for our house.

Check some of the classified for people that are renting their condos and such.

Judging by these responses it might be better to purchase a house with a monthly mortgage in the $1000-$1200 range and just not pay off my student loans as quickly.

If you want an apartment, South Point. You should be able to get a 2 bed 1 bath for close to $700. Decent location off Verot, near a Walmart and plenty of other stores, and lots of tail around the pool in the summer.

A 5 minute drive from Don's Specialty Meats is like heaven on earth.

You could probably buy and get a cheaper mortgage than that, just depends on the area you want to live and the style of house.

The house we were renting appraised for roughly $150K-$160K (estimated $600-$700/mo mortgage).

What part of Laffy will you be working in?

When I was working there, I liked the area near downtown off of W. Congress. The Saint Streets back towards Bertrand-in other words, the UL/Lafayette High areas.

I have a thread on the Money Board showing that the amount of pre-foreclosures in LA was up 468% in September '15 compared to September '14. It was up in November and December too although not nearly as high. I wouldn't be shocked to learn that the majority of that is in the Acadiana area. LA is one of only nine states to have an increase over the last year in those time periods FWIW.

Yeah, you've obviously never been there or lived there.

It's got it's problems, but it's a good little town and has it's areas to avoid just like everywhere else.

For a BR comparison, I would say it's a cross between Zachary and Port Allen.

And like the other guy says, Don's (and now Meches) more than makes it worth it.
