Lived near UAB, fiancée graduated from there about a year ago, have zero desire to live there again. Can tout the food trucks, local breweries, and all that but I-65 and 280 traffic pretty much means you are taking detours to get anywhere. B'ham has some of the worst, dumbest drivers in the US and that's saying a lot amongst gumps. If you two like walking then head out to the trail across from Samford U. on Lakeshore, forget Railroad Park. UAB's gym is pretty good but parking near it is hell. Lucy's coffee is legit and so is Sitar's lunch buffet. Post Office Pies is good but not good enough to deal with the weekend crowd. Only other thing of note is that getting a CCW permit is easy there and there's a few decent places to shop for handguns in the area. Do both.

Lived in B'ham area in early 2000s. I didn't realize how much we liked it until we moved back to Baton Rouge. Baton Rouge is a dump compared to that area. Yes, there are some bad areas. Homewood, Mountain Brook, Vestevia Hills were great places to live back then.

Look in Homewood or Cahaba Heights. Both are great areas for younger folks with or without kids. Bham has really changed in the last ten years or so. Its a great town if you like food, beer, and music (in that order).

Crestline Park and Crestwood are also good starter-home neighborhoods near to downtown/UAB

Lol...Ensley? Don't suggest this to anyone...if someone is looking for a place to move in the Bham area, of course they will figure out Ensley is a bad idea if they go to look...problem is the one time they look, they might not make it out alive.

Come live on the north side. Moved here in 2014 and I haven't gotten murdered yet. Seriously though, if you are looking for apartment living the north side is great. Southside sucks. Mid city or whatever you want to call the ballpark area is good but pricey. If you're looking for house living, I'd look in crestline park around Saw's juke joint.

I live in Southside now and love the convenience of everything. I'm a $5-7 Uber ride from Avondale and Lakeview, commute opposite of traffic every day, avoid 280 completely, and there's nothing too far away to keep me from doing anything. If you're looking for a more traditional area than I vote Homewood, English Village, Highland Park, and Vestavia in that order.

Pizitz food hall just opened up downtown that's a cool place to check out that I haven't seen mentioned yet. Birmingham has lots of little hidden gems that you'll enjoy discovering. Enjoy it as long as you're here!

Budget and whether you have kids would be helpful. If you have kids and can spend 400k
1. Mtn Brook
2. Vestavia
3. Homewood ( Edgewood, Hollywood)

If you have less to spend ( 275-300k)
4. Hoover ( Zoned for Spain Park)
5. Trussvlle

If no kids or want to send them to private, look in Crestwood, downtown, or Forest Park. Forest Park have a ton of large gorgeous historical homes. If we didn't have two kids and wanted to send them to Vestavia Hills City Schools, we would have bought their.

I grew up in Hoover and loved it then. Wife and I graduated Hoover in late 90's. The are that's zoned for Hoover High School has changed so much in the last 20 years, we didn't even consider sending our kids there. Lots of people we graduated with feel the same. If they can afford it, they all move to Vestavia Hills or Mtn Brook.

Prayers sent.jk

My older Sister lives in that vicinity. She seems to enjoy it.

She's a 58,divorced x2 woman,who seems to be re-discovering herself.

She lives right off University.

My Niece, her Husband, and my Great Nephew live off 280.Not to far out in a nice complex.

Live just over the mountain in Homewood. Quick drive to UAB and a much nicer area. Probably somewhat cheaper than the nicer areas closer to downtown.

Yep. I graduated Hoover in the early 90's. I can't imagine sending my kids through there now. Vestavia is pretty good, but has it's issues as well. There's a good-old-boy network there. If we were to do it over again, I'd pick Homewood or private school.

ETA: I see a lot of people I graduated with at the Vestavia ballparks with their kids. It's funny.
