Crestwood, if you don't mind packing heat.

Let me guess, you live in Hoover? You obviously don't have any idea what you're talking about

Forest Park. Which part of Crestwood do you live in?

As suggested, if you want to stay close to UAB, the condo's at Regions Field.

Also, many new apartments are built and under construction off the 7th Ave South and 29th Street area and off of Clairmont if you're searhing for a house.

I live in Denver now but id seriously consider moving to Birmingham if I had a good work opportunity. I do miss the south and I do think Bham is a much nicer place than it used to be.

Homewood will run you 400k up. If just you two, I would look around the Pizits building. Publix is in that area, you can walk to the ballpark, Good People, etc. Nice place for a young couple working at UAB.

Crestwood South. I'm basically right across from the filling station

Birmingham is recently named by Zagats as the next hot food city in America, and one of the top ten cities in the south by Southern Living

Birmingham is exploding. Far from "run down"

4,271st post suggesting Homewood.

Just moved back home to BR from Homewood (job transfer). Yeah, Southside / Crestwood / Downtown / Avondale are all cool, hip and edgy, but just like living in NOLA you'll need to develop your Birmingham-antenna to decode the "dicey-ness" of a proposed location to live. Stay safe for a year in Homewood and you'll figure it out.

BTW #1: You'll be shocked at the amount of purple and gold you see there. Fly that LSU flag proudly.

BTW #2: Pour yourself into the music, food and cultural scene of BHM. One way to is listen to my friends at Birmingham Mountain Radio. If you remember 106.1 The Zephyr, you'll get what BMR is up to.

Birmingham is run down as frick. Start looking for a house that you can turn and rent out.

Haven't been in a while, huh? They have really good food places and some very good school districts. Also a renewed push for arts, which is not something I don't necessarily care for, but usually a pretty good sign.

Homewood, Mountain Brook and Hoover are where I would look, but lots of other good places.

Prayers. It's no longer a question if everyone will be murdered in Birmingham but when.

What is that park in the middle of B-ham that has some remnants of the steel industry or something? This is a bad description but I was there a couple of years ago.

Sloss Furnaces, home of Sloss Fest. Look for my LSU hat there this summer.

Glen Iris is very close to UAB and has some decent houses.

Homewood is good but pricy. Vestavia Hills and Mountainbrook are very nice and very pricy.

Avondale is starting to improve, but as other posters said, maybe not try there at first.

I, personally, would not do Hoover. You do not want to drive in to Birmingham on 65 or 459 in the am or drive out at rush hour. frick that.

There are some nice apartments in the Lakeview area and TONS to do there. I'm partial to 5 points/Southside.

Highland ave area is nice if you don't have kids. Lots of restuarants and bars nearby, close to UAB, and probably the prettiest area of Birmingham. Birmingham is a great city, you'll love it.

Gah. I left that off. Tons of places in the Highland area, particularly near Rojo. Plenty of parks there too.
