Beijing looks great as well, but I heard it is harder to get around and meet people being an english speaker compared to Shanghai.

Beijing is far bigger than Shanghai is as far as how spread out it is. But you just need an Americanized neighborhood. Wudaokou I'd say is the cheapest and youngest. It's easy to meet people. Most people there are outsiders and are eager to form friends with others. You'll be good.

And just know about 20 phrases, and you can get around Beijing.

If you plan on getting a job, don't go to China at all as a recent graduate. New Chinese policies state they will not even issue you a work visa if you do not have at least two years of post-graduate work experience. Shanghai especially, they have gotten really strict there about issuing work visas (I live just down the coast in Shenzhen).

At least when I was there, Beijing wasn't all that strict on people there working without work visas. I did it for my first year. It was just managers and higher that they busted arse on.

Yeah, it used to be that you could work without one no problem. We got memos passed around the office last month though saying that the government was enforcing more stringent policies for foreigners. It just derailed two of our potential new hires, so it apparently isn't posturing.

Of course, it is China, so you could work there without a visa and probably be fine. It is something to keep in mind though.

Did you wake up one day and say "I think I will move somewhere in the continent of Asia"?

If so then there might be a few reasons why you shouldn't, but if you have a plan and a specific reason... then god bless ya.

I moved to Taiwan for 3 years after I graduated from Bama. Got a Masters at Feng Chia University. Became fluent in Mandarin. Travelled all over the Pacific Rim. That was '95-'97.

Do it while you are young...I had a blast.

You can do well teaching English part time. Only requirement is that you have to look like a westerner.

I feel like just deciding one afternoon that you want to move to a foreign country is never a good idea.

I have lived in Kuala Lumpur for almost 7 years. Its ok. A lot of the main cities (Bangkok, KL, hell even Jakarta) can be expensive depending on how hard you party.

For finanace I would go to Singapore. But first I would look at rent prices. A 1br will run you $1500 a month minimum.

Definitely. Aside from rape, murder, and trying to incite a protest, an American can get away with anything in China. In Singapore, they'll cut your nuts off for jaywalking.

Seriously, there's one on every corner. Think of it being like Starbucks here.

Still have the laws on whistling and spitting on sidewalks? Those used to get your arse whipped with a Rattan Cane. In other words, leave the dip at home. ??

It is something I have known that I've wanted to do for a long time. I've already been all over Europe and knew this was my next big time trip / experience.
