Parthia I think a lot of times doesn’t get the credit they deserve. They were probably Rome’s biggest rivalry.

Credit for what? Existing? Parthia was simply too far away for Rome to effectively reach. Parthia was never a threat to Rome.

Carthaginian War Elephants must have been incredible

The Romans knew how to fight elephants. That was always more of a historical glorification than anything else.

Two thing elephants hate - fire and really loud noises. They can also be baited into attacking 2 or 3 warriors while ignoring the multitudes that are surrounding, roping and spearing them.

Pyrrhus beat the Romans with elephants - once. No one ever did after that.

For something more ancient, the Scythians are similarly undervalued. They didn't build a unified empire so much as their people just happened to end up in the ruling castes of many different ancient states.

My pick. They essential told Darius off and Darius was a bad arse.

and also celebrate the Skill of the Scythians in that Art, who sent once to Darius King of Persia an Embassador that made him a present of a Bird, a Frog, a Mouse, and five Arrows, without speaking one word; and being ask'd what those Presents meant, and if he had Commission to say any thing, answer'd that he had not; Which puzzl'd and gravell'd Darius very much; till Gobrias, one of the seven Captains that had kil'd the Magi explain'd it, saying to Darius, By these Gifts and Offerings the Scythians silently tell you, that unless the Persians like Birds fly up to Heaven, like Mice hide themselves near the Centre of the Earth, or like Frogs dive to the very bottom of Ponds and Lakes, they shall be destroyed by the Power and Arrows of the Scythians.

Carthage

This.

If Hannibal would've marched on Rome after Cannae, human history would've been vastly different. Before people come back with the "he didn't have the resources to siege Rome" argument, the Roman army was absolutely decimated with only a sparse defense force left for Rome. Their allies were revoking their support left and right. Morale was at an all time low. They wouldn't have needed to siege Rome, the citizens of Rome wouldn't have much fight left.

He neither had the seige equipment, the manpower or supply lines to march on Rome.

The Servian walls at the time were a huge defense measure for the city of Rome with adequate men to cripple an attack (6,000- 10,000). Hannibal had only some 40-45,000 men to attack that wall.

People don't talk enough about the Mongol empire.

Dan Carlins wrath of Khans is very enlightening to just how insanely impressive they were politically and militarily for some horse farmers from the steppes
