Another poster introduced me to the Hinterkaifeck murders in a different thread a while back.
A German family was butchered to death at their rural farm in the 1920s. In the weeks before the murders, the father told people he saw strange footprints in the snow leading to the house from the forest behind the property. A maid also quit because she kept hearing footsteps in the attic after everyone had gone to bed, and believed the house was haunted. Investigators found evidence the murderer made himself at home for days after the crime, but no money or other valuables were taken.
There were rumors one of the young children at the farm was the result of an incestuous relationship between the father and his daughter, so I've read theories suggesting someone from the nearby town decided to exterminate the entire family, and the community and local LE were complicit in covering up the truth from investigators. No one has ever been charged.

The murder of 6 year old Suzanne Degnan also fascinates me because the crime happened a couple of blocks from where I currently live.
The little girl vanished from her bedroom on the north side of Chicago in 1946. Eventually, her decapitated body parts were found in various sewers around the neighborhood, and her blood was found in the basement of an apartment building a block and a half away from her home.
Chicago PD, under public pressure, pinned her murder on William Heirens, and coerced confessions out of him, despite having little evidence and inconsistencies between his confession and the facts of the crime.
Steve Hodel, who claims his father George Hodel was the Black Dahlia murderer, has theorized he was also responsible for Degnan's murder, given the similarities in dismemberment. Elizabeth Short's body was found off of Degnan Blvd in Los Angeles, a year and a week after Suzanne first disappeared, so he believes his dad was sending a deliberate message.

Just to mention a couple not mentioned yet:
The Boca Raton Mall murders
The Lane Bryant Murders

This one is still bizarre, especially if it was really just a robbery gone wrong.
The TJ Maxx in this pic is where the murders occurred. Of all the places to rob, the perp targeted a Lane Bryant in a huge shopping center on a Thursday morning? And then shot a bunch of middle-aged women execution style? It makes no sense to me how this is unsolved.

Eleanor Parker's disappearance.
She was good friends with some friends of mine. I met her a few months before she disappeared. She was a really nice sweet girl.

It was a carload of mental deficients that got lost. What’s baffling about that?

Not necessarily strange, but the most haunting for me are the Delphi murders.
They have photos, video, audio of the guy but they haven't made any arrests. It's been several years, so it worries me that it will go cold and there will never be any justice for those poor girls.
Didn't they (somewhat) recently completely change the composite sketch of the suspect on that case and it looks completely different from the face that they were using for a long long time. Be interesting to know what prompted that and what the police are holding back with evidence. I wonder if they have much more video and audio that hasn't been released. fricking weird case.

Goddammit, edited.

And have you posted about that little girl from Chicago before? It seems I’ve read about it before on here. I know it happened in the 40s, but I wonder why it’s not more well-known. It’s super disturbing. Maybe that’s it—it’s almost too disturbing, and it’s hard to sit with it for too long. I know it’s hard for me to read as intriguing as the mystery may be.

Not really a single case or incident, but many of the Missing 4-11 cases seem strange in the extreme, varied, and yet many have odd similarities.

quote:the new doc on netflix is good. It sheds light on what most likely happened. At the beginning it wasn't know that this girl was crazy as can be and wasn't taking her meds. She had an episode and accidentally killed herself.
Very creepy and disgusting, but I don't think it's that difficult to imagine what happened.

Obvious the local DA and police department are covering up for someone who murdered her. Lots of info on the Real Life, Real Crime podcast. They also do an interview with her family that will break your heart.
