Model Trains

My grandfather worked for the railroad, and had a bad arse set after he retired. I always thought it was cool, but I was too young to know or appreciate how intricate it all was at the time.
Flash forward 30 years... I have a couple of kids of my own now and recently they were captivated by a train set we came across so I knew what I had to do.
I'm back in the H0 model railroad game.
So far I just have a track, 3 engines and a a few train cars/cabooses. My kids love it, and I can hammer some beers watching it go around after they go to sleep.
Here's what I got...
My best engine: Athearn Southern Pacific GP40X
Coolest engine: Bachmann 2-6-0 Rio Grande
I got a few random train cars that came with the engines, but there is a bunch of stuff for sale on ebay.
Here are some I really like specifically because it's what I've seen in real life.
Boise Cascade
Weyerhauser
KCS
I also like the old tankers, especially if it's an old company that has been merged or no longer exists.
Anybody else have a set currently? How about when you were a kid?
Does anybody have a set boxed up in their attic they want to give me to make room for some new hobby?

Do any of those engines blow smoke?
That was the coolest.

You need some benzene and ethylene tanker cars so when you have a derailment, I can bring over my emergency response and cleanup model kit. It'll be lots of fun.

Yeah, the Bachmann 2-6-0 does.

I had a model train when I was a kid, I think I still have it somewhere. It was just a cheap one my parents bought me, but I loved it.
I'm going to have to look for it now.

Had this when I was a kid. Tried to get it running after being in my mom's attic, but nothing doing.

You need A LOT more graffiti on those train cars.
Anyhow... congrats on the new hobby. There are lots of good videos out there on terrain construction. With a little wire mesh and some plaster strips, you can make some solid hills, mountains and tunnels. That would be a great project to involve your kids in.
They will take a lot of pride in the terrain if you take the time to teach them some simple things like plaster and paint.

I wonder if his offer still stands. I was skeptical until the part about the imitation crab meat. I'm ready to drive to Philadelphia tonight.

I was a Lionel guy growing up, but you need a lot of room for that. I always thought I'd get into HO scale when I'm older. Of course, Railroad Tycoon is always an option.

Probably just the DC throttle/speed controller.
I'm pretty sure the individual G.I. Joe engine and cars bring decent money.

No, but I did get this for my kids (me).

If you live in Baton Rouge area, you might want to check in the Baton Rouge Model Railroad club which actually is in Jackson, La. They have an impressive HO layout along with Lionell, O Scale, N Scale and a few others. They do an open house the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month. It is free to attend. They have a really nice outdoor G Scale layout as well. My dad is a member and he really enjoys it plus my kids love to go with him as well.

At least you admit it. I'm still somewhat in denial.

There's a railroad club in NOLA if you are nearby. I've been to it a few times with a friend, but we live 45+ minutes away so it just wasn't convenient to join.
Crescent City Model Railroad Club
Here's a video of an open house there:
